I came across this last night... http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... 4572500866 ...and saw that he stated that because the car has stainless valves that it can be run on unleaded. I contacted the seller with this... Quote: Hi, just noticed that you stated that because the car has stainless valves that it can run unleaded. This is not the case. Mini's need a hardened exhaust valve seat installed to run unleaded fuels with no need for additives. The exhaust valve seat, being soft cast iron, over heats when unleaded fuel is used, causing valve seat recession. I would hate it if someone bought this car, ran it on unleaded with no additive, and started having problems. Thanks and good luck with your sale. Anyways, I got a reply from him saying... Quote: Hello, Thjanks for the info. If what you're saying is true, well then the fact that the Mini has had the timing adjusted is there as a secondary feature to run the car on unleaded. However, I have spoken to some executive members of the Mini car Club in Canberra (who are experts in minis) and they have verified that the stainless steel valves allow you to run unleaded. Then replied with... Quote: Nothing else is needed, other than tuning to what ever petrol you are running. It doesn't matter what valves you are running, the valve seat itself will still wear away due to it getting too hot. The valves themselves won't wear out. As I said before, because the seat is of cast iron, it is soft, and needs the lead in the petrol, or an additive to keep it cool, don't do this and valve seat recession occurs.
Now am I right? I'm almost 100% sure i'm right, and would hate for someone to buy this, run unleaded and have the head needing a reco in 10,000km. |

You are right mate ![]() When I had my head done, the machinist said you NEED stainless valve SEATS, and stainless valves are optional. |

Gees which executive members did he speak too? Not me at any rate ![]() Anyway you guys are missing the point. It can run on unleaded fuel fine, with timing adjustment for the less octane. But it will probably only last 5000km before the exhaust valves have recessed. I know lots of people who say they run on unleaded and the car runs fine, the problem is they don't know the reason why lead in fuel is important. 5L per 100km is pretty good, working out my current fuel economy and I get like 150km per tank at best, running a 1.25" SU ![]() ![]() |

Actually after a re-read it's a touch more amusing - 5L/100km is absolutely sen-fkn-sational, id love to see how it gets driven. And how could it have been OK stock out of the factory to run unleaded, when U/L was hardly even stocked. Hang on was it even stocked at all in 73? wasnt it like 86 that U/L came in?!?!?! |

OK, here's a pic of what happens after 6 months of unleaded use (no additive) on a rebuilt head. I did this deliberately to see what would happen. It's my old 'matic head and was on Daytona the 1098 Clubby when motor was rebuilt. Sorry pic is a bit dark...! Note the #2 exhaust seat- it's got chunks of cast iron pulled out of it... ![]() That's why I run Flashlube, except in Barney (he's got Rover unleaded seats). ![]() ![]() |
