when i bought my car i remember the owner telling me it "floats on fluid"

i beleive it was in reference to the suspension. Maybe he was talking about hydrolastic. im not sure but if anyone else has heard of this i would love to know what he meant.

it meant if you drove your mini into a lake, it would float.

only joking silly... yes it refers to the hydrolastic suspension

Suspension uses 2 hydrolastic displacers F & R, interconnected with a pipe each side. Pressure in there is ~300psi. Mine still works fine after 35 years... :D
Fluid is called hydrolastic fluid (surprisingly..) can be got from most Mini repair places including Karcraft.
In USA many people use a 50/50 mixture glycol antifreeze & water instead. That works too apparently.

Well there's water, alcohol, a bittering agent and I'm not sure what else. But it does look horribly like green glycol....
I just buy it, & pump it in with my trusty Mini clutch MC/Fiat pedalbox pump... :P

Doc if I ask really really nicely, can you bring that pump to Makkas next week for the BBQ... Mo needs his suspension back..!!!

My signature promotes Hydro... even though I was contemplating removing it, I think that its gonna stay.

Hey is it possible to buy a ready made hydro pump..??

I think it was an 1100 site I read that said the BMC factory workers were taking a swig every now and then so they added something (the bittering agent Doc said I suppose) to it so that they didn't.

What is the "preferred" way of clearing out a hydro system? Should you clean it out like you would your oil and radiator every time you need to fill it up again, or would that deteriorate the "bags" over time..??

Post subject:  Dump Valve

The factory hydro units just added new fluid to the old. A fella down here has modified his with a dump valve so that when you depressurize the system it dumps the old fluid into a catch tank.

The filling operation remains the same as per normal....fill with new fluid and pump up to just over 300 PSI.

Front height is three fingers under the guard or about 12 inches from the centre of the hub nut to the bottom of the guard (chrome strip) and 12 1/2 at the rear.

I dump mine on the driveway... it doesn't hold much anyhow.

Easiest way to change it is blow down each side by depressing the valve, but leave a few psi in there so the struts don't get out of place. Then pump it up with fresh stuff.
Pump it a bit higher than normal then let down carefully to the height you want. I use 3 fingers between 10" tyre & front guard.

Sure, I'll bring the pump to Makka's, but need some more fluid though... so somebody better buy some!
