I was taking my manifold and carbie off my mini....and stupid me didnt disconnect the battery.....idiot.

I managed to drop it onto the solenoid...SPARK...SPARKs...MORE SPARKS....FIRE@!!!!@!!!@@!@!!!!111

The fuel leaked out, hit the sparks and WOOSH!! Engine bay in flames..luckily i had an extinguisher next to me and had it all out within 20 seconds.

I let it sit for 24 hours while my nerves calmed themselves down, wacked on a 2nd hand 1.5" carbie i just got...and it started

Do yourself a favour, disconnect ure battery when u work in the engine bay...and if u dont....make sure u have an extinguisher!!

I have a 1kg ABE one which sits in the back side pocket in the Mini, another in the Commer behind the driver's head, and one on the garage wall.

I wouldn't bother with the "large aerosol" ones that SuperChaeap sell, but they also do a 1kg ABE one which is probably sufficient, and they're fairly cheap.

While you're there, pick up a shotgun to shoot at rescue helicopters (I understand that's the done thing these days)

i mounted one just under my dash on the passagers side

its a 1 kg and i have another one in my boot

just to make sure nothing happens

Whatever you buy, make sure it has a metal bracket and clip- those Quell plastic ones are crap and can break/come loose in an accident.

Was watching motor patrol on TV last night and a car on there caught on fire while driving on the freeway.. At the end of the show the fellow highly recomended that everyone should carry a fire extinguisher in there car. Of course he didnt at the time and the police came along and put it out..

Many years ago I worked at a Caltex, and as commonsense would dictate if your car catches fire whilst driving what do you do - dirive it into the nearest petrol station!!!!

I once had a guy in an XD Falcon pull RIGHT NEXT TO THE BOWSER with metre high flames coming out from under his bonnet, and at the time a LPG fuel tanker was unloading. Very, very lucky for all of us that we managed to put that one out.

Another time I was alerted to a guy screaming on the forecourt - his holley had backfired and somehow started a minor fire that he only noticed due to smell. He managed to pop the bonnet and by the time I ran out he was fighting the fire with his t-shirt (not effective). The fire was put out by fire extinguisher, and the guy had lost half his hair in the fire and was lucky to only have the paint on his bonnet bubble. He then almost started crying that he was going to miss the SummerNats because of that.

The point to all this - from working 1 seven hour shift a week at a servo over a 4 year period I saw three car fires in total (the last one saw the woman abuse us for putting it out - robbed her of an insurance claim), so from experience I recommend a fire extinguisher.

I remember watching an XA Falcon coming towards us suddenly swerve, everyone jump out and start throwing beer from cans under the back of the car - his brake pads had caught fire.

I got myself a 1Kg Dry Chemical B:E / 10B:E extinguisher from my local discount shop.

Full metal ones with brakcet, $39.99.

Worth waaaay more than that to me now. I think ill hang it up in the garage as a reminder lol

I've always had an extingusher in my cars. But the one time it was needed, it wasn't used.

November last year stupid Holden dealer managed to get my first Jackaroo Turbo Diesel to catch fire and burnt out the engine bay. Car was written off and two of the mechanics went to hopsital from the plastics fumes. The extingusher was still sitting there in it's bracket in the footwell, unused.
