Post subject:  Ram Tubes
Have been getting negative feedbck about ram tubes with
"sock airfilters".
Do these type of filters let in more dirt/dust than any other
types of filter set-up on Mini's?

it's quite likely for sock air filters to let sock air filters into the engine.. :)

We ran Baracade's old 1380 (now Ozmotorsport's) on GR's engine dyno without sock,s then with. No difference.
Socks keep crap out, but to filter properly they should be oiled with UniFilter oil or similar.
I wouldn't run a car with no filters, unless it's a track car and there's just no room. :wink:

As there's no room in mine for ramtubes, I just use 2 home made stubstacks and a Ramflo (with `Finer Filter' foam in). 8)

Thanks-Yes I'm running oiled Uniflow filters,but have had advise that these
are supposedly renound for letting more dust paticles in "other"filter set-ups.
But a I notice a lot of off-road 4wd use oil filled filters-so they can't be that bad.

I'm always amazed at what's in mine whenever I wash it out. Yes they work good.... if oiled. :wink:

If in doubt use stripper elements over the socks. I have used Unifilters for years, one motor went to 200,000 kms. The question I always ask when someone starts spouting forth with advice like this is ....How do you know,,,,,, and the answer wants to be reallly good. There are a lot of experts out there that speak a lot of rubbish. Nothing wrong with Unifilters in my book, but I'm not an expert, I have only used them and can only pass on what I have found.

I have ram tubes fitted to my 1275 LS , when I got i t , it had no filters , Willson automotive in Hobart have ordered me some sock filters, they say they are fine , I hope to get them this week. Tony

Depends on the material that the sock is made of. If oiled it should collect alot of junk. I recently washed out my foam filter that I oil up and it was filthy so it's got to be working :wink: If the socks you speak of are those foam type ones that fit over ram tubes, I can't see why they don't work oiled up? :?

Also: run the foam filters without oil and they turn to dust, proven fact in my experience! :wink:

can someone explain to me the purpose of a ram tube, some of them are so small they dont seem to do anything, yet i was told that no filter on your carbie will ruin it, i dont understand.....

Short ones (stub stacks) provide a radiused entry to the carb. This improves airflow and in the case of a Weber/Dellorto, helps the carb's mixture control at low rpm.
Longer ones in addition add to the induction length. This can improve torque and/or power depending on the cam etc used. :wink:
If you run NO filter, airborne dust particles can rapidly turn your highly machined pistons, rings and bores into low grade scrap. ie it will wear out much earlier. :cry:

Yes-I use to run Ramflow pancakes,before fitting the tubes&socks.
