Post subject: | Engine breathers - WTF?? |
I took my side plates off my motor tonight. One has a breather in it. I tipped it sideways and a whole lot of water or very thin oil ran out. WTF?? Is this normal? How exactly does it work? It just looks like an empty cylinder ... ![]() |

It should have a lump of steel wool like a steelo pad secured by a wire Y-piece. If not clean it out and buy one of those coarse pot scourers(the woven steel ones), stuff it up the larger hole and bend a bit of 10 guage wire into a vee - there is no easy way to explain what size - trial and error. It is supposed to stop the contents of yuour sump vomiting all over that new rad cowl...lol Hooroo Rob Forsyth Miniot!! |

Use a S/S scouring pad... pot scrubber. ![]() Really it's not a proper oil separator, you need a centrifuge for that- the mesh is a flame trap. |

Mate how thin was the oil...or as you said water...maybe it just moister rising...I'd don't i'd be to worried...degrees it and out the a bling it and put a put one of those realy course scorers dowqn it with a stick..just dont use steal wool as it will find its way down to the bottom and that wont be good for the dyno Day ![]() |

Question are these side plate breathers fitted standard on a Mark 1 1275 S block? If so would the plates and breather from the 998 motor be advisable to use on the S block? |

Cooper S ones are the same as late 998 (76 onwards). They use a thicker rubber seal than the thinner cork gaskets. They have a deeper groove that the seal sits in. I know this because I fitted thin cork ones in JAM (late 998 block) and it leaked big time. Karcraft sold me the Cooper S ones and now not a drop ![]() |
