Post subject:  Moke body work help

Hope the pics come out.

My moke has an unusual rust problem (by way of WHERE it is) and I was interested in ideas on how to fix it. Does anyone know where or if I can get a replacement panel for across the front of the car..? Failing that, what would be the best way to cut this out and fix it..? Especially given 1. this is where the mirror bolts on 2. this is where the wiper motor bolts on and 3. this is where the windscreen bolts on...!!! (needs to be strong as) I have a new windscreen channel thing though if that helps. I am in Sydney if anyone happens to have a replacement RUST FREE panel they wanna sell...

2nd question, does anyone know whether cutting down the height of the windscreen is acceptable..??

I feel your pain, damn cancer  Unfortunately there's no "easy" fix, it's just a matter of good ol fashioned panel beating. Cut each section out 1 at a time getting some scrap steel and shaping it then mig it in place :?

Yep. Sorry Marcello but I'm afraid you won't find a good replacement.
The windscreen is designed to channel water into there and accelerate the rust :(

If you don't want to do as wolfman suggested, I cut & pressed up a replacement section for the right hand side - a sheet metal place can do it, but it's so small anyone with a decent size vice should be able to do it.

Thats what my plan was. all and all I am the one fixing it. (when i get to it)

its up the side of my place anyways. lol

Yeah I'd give that a shot. Grab some zinc plated mild steel.

With a decent vice, get some angle iron to act as jaw gaurds, and to extend the size of the bends you can do.

Be greedy on how much you cut out. You wanna get back to good steel.

No need to do it as one piece. Do one part first, weld it in. Fab another piece to fit.

stupid thing is that apart from a little surface rust on the floors, the rest of the car is good..!!!

OK looks like gonna find myself an old stove to cut up..! ha ha.

Will have to start a progress pics job file. I think that the paints coming off tomorrow so will be able to assess the REAL damage.

Next question...... is it possible to fix the windscreen on some other way..???

I've seen a couple of windscreens that have been replaced by a commercial glass mob,
with an extruded aluminium frame, just like they do for boats.
Looks OK. The real strength in the windscreen actually comes from the perspex "side shields". Luckily my moke has an electronic cutout at 180km/hr
