Post subject:  Gearbox problems
Dad has a 72 Moke. It was a 1100 with a 1128 box with hardy spicers and the dodgy wand gear stick.

Now I've done up a 1275 with a used Moke rod box that appeared in good nick. All in and sitting pretty.

PROBLEM is no gears. I've mounted the rod change shifter but no gears. The rod change selecter is a bit sus. Now question is if it's not the selecter could there be an internal problem that would make the gearbox lose all gears?

Does it feel like you're selecting the gears, but no drive? Or is it that you can't select the gears?

Same thing happened with our K we are restoring and it turned out to be a collapsed pressure plate on the clutch.
Maybe you should suss that out....just a suggestion

the little thing the gear stick ball goes into could be the wrong way around, i had that problem and gears couldnt be selected, all i did was turn it around and hey presto, running mini

Ty, its probably the selector shaft, the one poking out the back of the gearbox, not engaged with the fingers of the selectors inside the box. This shaft needs to be lined up with the fingers and turned clockwise (toward the RH front wheel when under the car). Would be best to take the RH diff cover off the box to release the pressure of the spring/ball on the shaft. Maybe a bit fiddly. Once the pressure is released, if you can push/pull on the shaft relatively easily, then this is most likely the prob. Always best to check this crap on the bench before installing. Good luck.

Ty,,,so you`re moving the stick in approx the right direction & the right amount of movement,,,but it doesn`t actually engage the gears in the box???

or is it that the stick won`t actually move into the positions needed to effect sellectment of each gear?

do you understand what i`m getting at there???

cause quite often people do (as someone has allready pointed out) fit the coupling, shaft & gear stick the wrong way round/up, so the ball on the end of the stick isn`t actually running in the alloy "eye" inside the shifter housing the way that it`s supposed to

easy to fix,,,push roll pin out of coupling,,,remove gear stick, swing rod with coupling around 180deg & re-fit pin & stick, problem solved

sometimes people fit an exhaust retaining bolt to the diff side cover way too long & it passes thru the housing & out the other side & fouls on the shifter coupling, easy fix too,,,remove & fit shorter bolt :-)

I`ve also come across what would seem to be a gear engagement problem,, when in fact it was simply a stripped drive flange at the wheel assy

thanks guys. Will sus it out when I get home from work this afternoon. God I hope it's not internal.

Steve no race car yet. No money, no motivation and no time. Having said that if I ever got the bastard started things would be different.

Anyway the gearstick sees to do allot of moving just no gears. Is it likely to be internal if I lose all gears?

and I can't change the gearstick around 180 as there is a slot in the side of the ball. So it can only go one way.
