Post subject:  Aligning gearbox linkage

Hey,

my mums mini is sitting in the shed with a freshly rebuilt gearbox (good bits from other gearboxes we had laying around) but the problem that stopped us putting it all back together and running was the fact that the linkage on the gearbox (is an old rod type, i think?)

it has solid gearstick section with the rod that comes out of the diff part and down into the gearbox?

anyway.. is there a procedure to getting this all lined up. My plan is to lift out engine and gearbox, bolt the gearstick jigger to it and then adjust it. This could be hours of trail and error and i'm guessing theres aprocedure to it (hopefully)?

Any tips from you guys?

First of all What you have is a Remote Change. If the linkage from the gearstick to the box is a solid arm then that's a Remote Change. A rod change will have 2 individual rods from the gear change mechanism to the gearbox, unsealed.

When you have the gear change unit out of the car and sitting on the ground. Looking from the gearstick towards the diff end of the arm, having it sit flat on the bench, the 2 prong diff housing selector fork needs to be 10 degrees clockwise from the 12 Oclock (pointing straight up) position (so slight 10 degree angle). Either that or it's 10 degrees anti-clockwise

Doc will confirm this  Hint: It's in the Leyland manual 8)

mmm remote change then!!

i haven't gotten to that part yet unfortunately.. :-\

we've had the gearbox completely dissasembled (ie a bunch of gears, syncros n shafts laying on a table) and i'm pretty sure that the linkage on the back of the box is out of whack (has 2 splined shafts with a 2piece linkage between it)

Not actually gonna be getting around to this for a long while yet (still have a range rover engine to get back together and a complete running gear swap/strip with a pair of clubmans) but will probably lookinto this more when i get to it :-\
