The question I have is about ignition advance. I have been running 98 octane fuel and every thing was good, then the other day I put 95 octane in and at anything above 3500rpm it started to get a bit hot :( . (like 90-95* instead of the normal 80-85*)
Does the 95 need more or less advance, or should it be the same?
Pete

I am no expert on ignition timing, but I would think lower octane would require a slightly higher timing setting for the same power output.

Slight hijack: when did standard octane unleaded drop to 91 RON ? I always thought it was 93..... :?

This is what my thoughts are: Less octane, less advance. High advance on low octane fuel means there is a higher chance that your engine will ping. Also has alot to do with what compression ratio you are running. The more compression the more likely you are to ping on lower octane fuel. If you are running lower octane fuel and it doesn't ping, don't worry about it?

Overheating is usually because the ignition is too retarded??? :?

If you are changing from 98 to 95, that's quite a small jump and it shouldn't matter unless you are running really high CR?

Jam Normal has always been 91 RON  :?:

I must admit, when I switched from Vortex to Ultimate, I bumped up the timing a tad and the performance is noticably better! :D

I spent a good 2 hours running up and down homebush stadium testing the ignition timing for Lillee last night. I think it's good... but it's hard to tell really... So long as I am 90% of the way there I think it's good enough.

But don't tell anyone before Dyno day! :P
