Old Rego Plates?

Post subject:  Old Rego Plates?
My Mum told me recently she still has the original rego plates from my first mini.
Long story, basically I sold it to my sister and her boyfriend at the time drove it into the ground. But the car was registered to my Mum after seeing what happened to the car she removed the plates.

Is this a can of worms or is it worth pursuing to register my 72 mini with those plates. Original black and white plates look better than the new green and white jobs.

Don't know about there - but here there is a proces to just that - keep the plates within the family handed down from vehicle to vehicle -

There is a fee of course but it is just fill in the appropriate form at motor reg and your away

I think you have to have plates in "storage" if you wanna use them again. I think that once a car goes unregoed, it looses it's plates and the number plates themselves arent numberplates (if that makes sense). Like with custom plates, you own the right to use that number. You may have to get these plates as a custom plate ($310 and you get 2 new plates aswell), only if no one else has them. I'd go see vicroads about it, though. 8)

Hmm i concur with the boss..

The way i understand it with general issue plates you have no real rights to the plates if they arent registered. For instance If I let my car (KKE-079, original 1969 plates and reg) run out of rego (which incidentally it has never done and wont) I believe I would have to re-register the car (With an RWC) and then I would have to nominate that I would like to use "KKE-079", rather than the auto issue which by now would be blue on white T**-*** series plates. So even if I said, "AH I have the KKE-079 plates!", VR would re-issue the plates, meaning you'd have to pay the $22ea plate fee and have yucky shiny brand new plates. Thats not to say you couldnt slip the original ones on when they arent looking ;)

I think this is kind of a covert way to renew plates, cos mine arent really reflective and they're pretty chipped and stuff, but I like them, they're classic - so I understand your dilemma.

Pete, I enquired about getting replacement plates for my van, which is the same boat as your K (never been unregoed). Mine are quite bad, well the front one especially. $25ea will get you a direct replacement plate. That means that it is exactally the same. No reflective paint... blah blah blah. In theory, they will be the same as they produced back in 1970. 8)

I have my Van's original plates. VicRoads told me you CAN get the old number reissued and keep the original plates if you want, as long as they are still in good condtion andthe number is not yet taken. But you have to pay the $310(??) fee for the rights to them.

Why not give VicRoads a call and ask them? 13 11 71 :)

EDIT: I think this info is on their website somewhere too?

Yep, that's right. I was torn between having the original plates or using my personal number I have had since I was 18 in two states. The personal number won.

It comes down to what sort of car it is. Original concours style, or modded. Adds apeal to an original car to have the original plates. That is why my van is still on full rego and not on club plates, I want to keep it regoed as it's never been off rego!

found the same thing when i wanted to re-use my mini's old plates.. made me cry... $310 or $380 i was quoted.... how annoying!

Po - didnt know that about reissuing old style plates, i would have thought in the name of "road safety" (i.e making sure they can read ur plate on the red light camera) they wouldnt reissue them like that.

My plates are quite amusing, the white numbers look like the paint's been literally sponged on, like the paint has swish marks in it!

Speaking of rego, got the bill today, 546.20... man it seems to come around a lot :)
