Post subject: | *surprise* mini issues, please help |
hey people, i have a 1970 mini k, its got a 1275a+ metro turbo engine, hif44 carb and elec dizzy (lucas....eeergghhhh) anyways it has been building up enough carbon on cilinders 1 and 2 to go through bp6es plugs. this happens once a month. (handy hint, if a plug has heaps of carbon on it just grab a lighter and burn the end of it...get some more use out of it) its running 14deg advance on the dizzy, i use only bp 98 octane fuel, tappets are set at 14thou cold. its been using more fuel lately also. i think its a worn needle in the carb...because it smells quite rich at idle but doesnt feel great at top end...doesnt really want to go much faster then 80mph. also now at about 5000rpm theres a bit of smoke coming out the back which never used to happen. any help or advice would be appreciated. cheers geoff |

Goto bp5es and give that a go, and don't use your choke so long at start up. This will probably sort it. Unleaded fuel needs hotter spark to burn, hence why yours are carbonising. Other opinions to follow. Cheers Aaron |

if you have never used a choke then your carb is more than likley running rich. Don't know too many people running SU's that don't have to use a choke to start it when cold and tuned properly. Cheers Aaron |

I couldn't start either of my Mini's without a choke!!! ![]() Yours would have to be too rich if you can start and drive without a choke! |

I agree about the choke thing... But why is it only running rich on 1 and 2 generally as I understand if it is going to run rich it is on 2 and 3 cause of siamese ports issues etc. Maybe there is an air leak? I don't know ![]() |

Mine doesn't need a choke to start either, just let the fuel pump work for a few seconds and she starts first time. It's probably more down to the local climate more than running rich, by the time I normally need it it's already around 20+ degrees ![]() |
