Post subject:  Warming up the mini
I know this might be a stupid question but does everyone warm their mini before driving? I usually do, but my dad reckons with modern oils you don't need to... Can you take off pretty much straight away and drive slowly till it's warmed up?

I do warm up and Engine when its cold....I try and get the wife to do it...but she's usualy running late for work :?

I do it most of the time, when I can. If there is no time, well I can't warm it up.

I usually start the car in the morning, then go and brush my teeth. :lol:

if i recall correctly the best way to warm up is to let it run for a minute or so and then drive it leisurely until it comes up to temperature

i think everything in the engine has a happy operating temperature (metal bits and oil) and damage may occur along the fringes of their tollerance

I really don't think warming up a motor is necessary at all. Just don't red line it till its warm. The oil these days has better additives and really the motor is probably 30 years old anyway.
As long as your oil pressure is good... go. Just take it easy.

Pull out the choke, start the Moke up and drive away but keeping the revs down for the first couple of K's.

My method is as follows:

Roll car down driveway (coz it's noisy and I usually wake the kids)
Pull out choke
Start
Idle for 30 seconds
Rev it a bit
Drive off

I wait a little to let oil get circulating (30 seconds), but the crucial thing is not to keep the revs low, but to not labour the motor, i.e. let it slug along in a high gear. Revs don't kill engines (until you're at the limit of the engine parts stress), but putting the heel to the steel in a high gear, low revs stresses all the bearings. Better to use a lower gear, medium revs until it's at operating temp, and it will get there quicker when it's doing work. So accelerating, going up hills - that makes the engine warm up. Going downhill for 10 minutes won't do anything.

Well that's the advice for motorbikes. The A series was designed in the Jurassic period, using brontosaurus fat for lubricant.

Normally I just pull choke out start Granny and then let her sit there for a few minutes and then drive off.. I never race Granny's engine so its never an issue when driving around in her.. I just take it nice and easy :)...

Just in case you didn't know, redlining a motor when cold is a good way to crack pistons. Not that I've ever done it, but I've seen the results of those who have... :shock:
