Post subject:  sump guard, fan belt - newbie Qs PART2
part2 of how to repair ur mini for dummies!

ermm....here i go again
1) how do i change the 2nd fan belt as shown below - which part must i loosen or unscrew in order to fit in the belt?

2) i attempted to clean up the rust in my boot but not sure if im doin the right thing...
bought a rust converter (n it says that the end product should look like dark blue/black but ive found my rust turning into more orangy!!!?....am i doin the right thing - is this how it suppose to look???

3) sump guard "triangle?" - alright i think i have some sort of sump guard there but im wondering could i also fit the "triangle" on top of what i had as a addition protection??

in the first n 2nd picture, i think it shows my mini is leakin from that "yellow" thingy?
what is that? n how could i prevent this?

also in the first picture - what is the big silver box thingy beside the yellow nut, the one above the cupboards in pic2? cause im pretty sure my mini had leaks from there yesterday when i took it for a LOoOOng drive

n with the 3 picture, would i be able to replace the windscreen chrome lining myself? the chrome or stainless steel surroundin has lost it shine n it looks alittle rusty..
how much does it normally cost?

lastly what sorta wiper do u guys use?..the stainless or the chrome ones??
n how much are they goin for?

Chrome insert costs about $16 each last time I checked. They can be a real pain to insert, more so on a new rubber or in my case a rubber that has been on the car for years but without a filler strip. With the right tool and expertise it is a matter of minutes. Should cost sweet FA at a friendly windscreen shop.

well that yellow looking thing is just a bolt holding teh tie rod end on, nothing can leak from there, id look above that as someting would be leaking ontop and dropping on it.

That big silver box, what u mean the gearbox????

i dont think that can leak anything
perhaps the nut was spread with putty/liquid nylon to make it lock on,
much like some locking nuts with nylon bands within them that grip onto the bolt/stud.

theres another thread with someone complaining how hard it bloody is to do window rubbers. by all means, you can try yourself.

the big box is the gearbox/bottom-of-engine. (unless the rover has a different engine to the old ones)
remember, the gears of a mini are put in the space (engine sump) under the pistons/conrods/crankshaft, not in a separate box like normal cars

all minis leak abit of oil, technology like that has large tolerances (as opposed to accurately sized parts and small gaps), and dont use much modern stuff like polymer/rubber seals.

its good, you can see that there still is oil in the car and check its colour without pulling out the stick

alright had another close look when i opened the bonnet!..and found the engine (under the rocker cover) is kinda oily - seepage!!

makes me wonder if the oil is leaking from the engine down to the gearbox n than down to the ground?...if so does it mean i need to change the GASKET?? am i able to do this myself? does it also mean i need to drain all the engine oild b4 doin that?

I was working at O'briens 5 years ago, and we were charging 20 bucks for each rubber. i.e. front and back windows would cost 40 bucks. I dont bother with the chrome strip since it bloody fades, and discolours again pretty quick.

It's probably coming out the cracked or shrunk rocker cover gasket, then running down the engine and dripping off the gearbox. Yes you can fix it yourself. Just make sure to scrape all the old gasket off before fitting the new one. :wink:

is there like a STEP by STEP webiste that i can go to or a manual abt rover 1.3minis?

i know u guys are not gonna believe this but im actually a qualified TANK mech!...not that i paid much attention during my classes during my military days in singapore but hey all the TERMinologys like gasket/manifold/leakage are comin back to me now...

yeah i remember once changin a gasket in the manifold...dont we need like a "GLUE" as well?...or could i just chuck the new gasket on without any glue?

is there like a cream or solution that i could polish my chrome with?..

and so if i was pay some1 else to do it....i should change the new stripe to STAINLESS??? rather than chrome?

bottomline whats the main diff with stainless n chrome?..all i know that chrome is much more expensive n doesnt last as long...so why bother with chrome? correct me if im wrong...cause im lookin to get the stainless wipers

No need to drop out the oil to do it. Just undo the 2 Bolts on the cover and lift up and pull out old gasket and fit new on. Clean reound where the old one sat on the head and refitt and all done.

Chrome is a metal that has been electrolytically plated; usually steel.
Stainless Steel is an alloy which does contain chromium.
The insert around the windscreen; referred to as the "locking strio" is simply a plastic strip that pushes out the rubber tightly. Most locking strips are indeed plastic and have a small layer of foil inside; wheter this be stainless steel or aluminum. It will fade, as plastic does, and there is nothing you can do about it. :twisted:

I'm yet to fit my locking strip; gonna wait till i can get to a windscreen place as there is a special tool needed to do it. Believe me there is no other way to fit it yourself; KY jelly, sorbolene creme, silicon spray, rp7. None of them work.

If you want the `black' look not chrome that fades, rubber places sell the locking strip in black rubber and it's much easier to fit than the plastic/pretend chrome one. :wink:

nahh.,..i want my mini to BLINK!...
btw another quick...ermm i notice that the gearbox sits very closely to the ground!!!

in fact its like 2-3 cm from the bottom - is there anyway to protect the gearbox??? like mods? by pushin it higher (if theres space in the already very crowded engine compartment)

i particular worried as the roads are not that particular good in my area!....

Yep fit a set of HI LO's to the front and rear and lift er up nice and high,

Or you can get a sump gaurd made so nothing can hit it.

oh is that what a "sump gurad" is?..hehehe...been meanin to ask but was to afraid
anyway if u refer to pic1 n pic2...it does kinda look like a "sump gurad" isnt it?

with the HILO thingy?...are u referin to what MGB n mustang owners usually do to their cars...where the car looks kinda tilted to the back?..if so i dont think my mini will look good with that kind of modification...
