Post subject:  Swapping engines - legalities?

If I have a late model Clubman (998) and I want to fit an early model Clubman motor (1098), what are the legalities?

I heard someone (Kevin G I think) mention engine numbers should correspond with year of manufacture, and if they dont....no rego. Is this right?

Absolutely. Mines in at the mechanics having it done now. An 1100 bored 40 thou bla bla bla.
I called Transport SA and they said as long as what is on the car that the engine to be fitted in is the same as what was in the original car to start off with. Ie; 998 with drums and 1098 with drums. A 1275 would not be eligible for swapping unless you have discs.
Then as far as re-registering it with the new engine number goes; the mechanic said you just fill out an engine transfer number and bobs yer uncle. they dont often wish to inspect the vehicle. In SA anyway.

yea I want to build a good strong 1098, while driving with my stock as a rock 998. But I want to be sure a Clubman that came out with a 998 can have a 1098 from an older model.

Did the late Clubmans come out with a 1098? I think only the early ones did.

SA rego laws are VERY DIFFERENT from here - NSW.

I thought it was the later model clubmans that had the 1100s.
I am fairly confident that you shouldnt have any issues with registering it, as all they check for or would check for is that the engine is indeed not stolen or whatever and that your clubman has all of the things that the clubman with the 1098 would have had.

i'm no to sure exactly but i think in nsw if you just want to swap the engine, say a dead 998 for another reco'd 998 you just need to change the engine number on your blue slip but goin from say a 998 to a larger engine say 1098 then you need to get an engineers ok, at least thats what my bro had to do with his SS ute

Earlier Clubbies had the 1100(1098). Later clubbies and the clubbie S had 998's........... I believe

The only thing you will have to be careful of is that you must run the same pollution gear that was originally fitted to yer car. Since yer only considering the 1100, then the drum brakes wont be a problem.

I'm running a 1098 in my deluxe, which originally had a 998. No dramas there (I have heard of an 850 being failed coz it had a 1098 stocker in it - over 15% larger). When I changed the engine number this year (over a year since I put the engine in, but anyway), I just filled in a change of details slip. I could have taken it to the RTA to do it for free, but instead I payed $10 to a inspection station to do it, since the local RTA is renowned for failing Minis - one got failed a while back coz the engine was painted the wrong colour!!

Considering the 1098 block is the same as the 998, your main worry isn't the size but pollution gear etc. If it has it now, it still has to have it with the 1098 to meet ADRs.

Cheers,
Anto.

One problem is the later 998 had pollution gear and the 1098 didn't, not that most testing stations seem to know or care.

I got pinged only because the engine I was fitting was a 1098, 4 or 5 years older than the car- which is a `78. I had put it on the road & registered it 2 years earlier with a 998 and no pollution gear, no problem then.

If doing this swap to a `77-78 998, I recommend you keep a 99H series block, put the 1098 crank etc into that, less explaining to do..... 8)
I still might have to bore a 998 block yet and do this, we'll see in a month or two when I go for a blue slip.

Yeah you could put the 1098 gear in a 998 so that you have the 998 engine number. That way you simply have a bored and stroked 998 and nobody is any the wiser :)

Or alternatively source a block with the prefix 9FXEY/9FSAY, with a pollution control 12G940 from an LS, who's gonna know

Maybe I'm dumb but I think the RTA/inspection stations have a register of engine numbers, so that trick would be a no-no... when they pinged my 1098 they told me what year Mini the motor was out of.
I know they do have a gander at the back of the block too, during blue slip inspections..

But nothing surprises me, anymore. I've seen a 1275 block with a 10Y/Ta/H number, a 1275 auto with a 99H number, etc...

I've just bought a 1275 auto block, but the number is kosher. :P

Well I wish they'd give me that list - the best I know is that my motor is out of a Clubman, what year is lost on me. Could also have helped me narrow down the year of manufacture of my Mini. It's the 524th Deluxe originally ceramic green (I believe only a 1965 colour) so I guess it's a 1965 model.

PM me the engine number and I'll find out the date its car was built...

"Ve haf veys of finding out..."

Graham (the guy with white/red stripe race Mini at Wakefield) has a list... :P

PM sent. Can you figure out the month and year? I hear lots of 850 owners who know the month of manufacture (by the colour of the mirror or something :) ) but I have trouble with the year! Rego currently believe it was manufactured in 0/1966. The rego guy asked what year it was and we had to make a random guess. Could have said any year we wanted.

OK, so my clubby has power retarding pollution gear. If I put a pollution head on this 1098 block, will I get rego in NSW?
