I have found a MK2 Cooper S that has been off the road for a while. Bog stock original with Logbook and everything matches.

Needs total Resto - Body straight with major rust in corner of the floor where drivers accelarator pedal is (where the 3 panels meet in the corner)

Only things incorrect are Dissy and Temp gauge - Speedo has a Kph sticker over the MPH so hopefully will peel off

What do you reckon max dollar is???????

someone i met on the weekend bought his totally original cooper s
$8000 in 2002.
given it:
new paint job,
dented rear tailight section
engine recondition

he's very admirable in his peccable desire for correct parts.
i overheard it was one of the most pure original minis there.
he'd never sell his first pride, no matter how much it has cost him,
but you see other cooper s' fetching for about $16K onwards.

if you were to have it in your hands, you'd keep it. and restore it with alot of love irregardless of costs in the long term
the only thing holding you back now is the initial amount and immediate costs
you just need to see if you can jump over the first hurdle

Also depends on what "original" is really. Do the engine and body numbers match, Cooper S head? the right brake booster, oil cooler, driveshafts, dizzy, wheels, speedo, heater - all of these things would be expensive to buy so them hanging there even is they need complete reco is a good thing if you intend to start a resto to original condition.

Its also useful to be able to point out to the owner stuff thats missing if you intend to bargain.

Yes, for every "S" item that is missing it will cost you more $$ over non S items, so look carefully. Check the Engine number and Body numbers, look in the back to see if it has the factory right hand fuel tank bolts (to make sure it is a real S) etc.

Whatever you pay, just remember that it will cost you another $5000 give or take a few $1000 to restore it back to original condition... with that in mind go for it! Good luck!

You will need to check everything very carefully....If it not all there, then it will be worth much less than you think. Whats the gearbox like?
Is the motor even running? Has it been rebuilt at all? Has it been 'warmed' over?

Also you need to consider what kind of resto you are contiplating.

Original to show......Very very expenisive!!!!

Just drive it to the club meets...still quite expensive!

I find the best way to value a car is to break it into parts (Not literally :shock: ). Add up what you have got.....divided by 2 and offer him that amount of money.

That way, worst case is you wreck it and get your money back :wink:

Up here in QLD at the moment is a very nice Mk2, as original except the colour. Rebuilt everything. $10000 would buy it.......Roadworthy, rego, ready to go :D

But to be a show winner you might have to spend upwards of another $10000 on it:!:

I'd say if its complete, then $5K or $6K would be a bargain. $8K would be not unreasonable, but not so much of a bargain. compare it to restoring any other mini. If you've got all the original parts then the resto won't cost much (if anything) more than restoring a basic mini and the amount of work is the same and the end result will be worth much more than $5K more than a standard mini... Top notch examples are starting to sell for over $20K in some places...

If you're looking for a project, buy it. If you're just looking for a Cooper S, then add up what it will need spending on it, plus the purchase cost and time involved. If you can (or have a friend who can) do the bodywork yourself it would help too. If it comes out less than $15k you're in front. anything over that you'll probably find something already done for that price. I bought mine (Mark 1 1/2 69S) just over a year ago for $10K. would have cost much more than that to buy+resto one myself
