![]() hahaha So the story is apparently that ive at the very least blown head gasket Good on it i say Thanks to Simon Kerr ![]() ![]() But i talked to a mechanic today and he told me a list of things and a price, of which i am now not sure what they mean but ill write them anyways I dont even know what the initials are for now ![]() but heres the work. - just for a blown head gasket, cracked or whatever else can be wrong will be more R&R Head C/test and Machine Surface VRS Gasket Set and coolant they do all the work $500 dollars maximum. So i suppose even if it isnt a good price, ill have to get it done anyways i need it to be ready for the show on the 15th ![]() So after consistant radiator trouble, a complete inability to tune and for the car to idle, running like a block of crap, misfiring blah whatever else, maybe this can help ![]() The only piece of work ive had done in 20 months, barring the brakes. However, i nkow the car ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() But is that a fair price?? |

You are going to get more than one quote, no matter what the reply ? Tassie car club should recommend a good mechanic. You must be one of the unluckiest mini owners I know of. ![]() |

Mmmm, I ran a mini with a blown head gasket to/from uni for 6 months. Got worse every day. Head was R.S. by the end, but could not afford anything else at that time. Many people on here had commented that there must be something wrong with your head. You will really notice the difference once you get it fixed ![]() |

Burn down their workshop, then go laugh at them when they are jobless. ![]() Shop around, maybe look into getting your head couriered somewhere if it works out better in the longrun (might get better work done elsewhere). $500 seems reasonable...i think...i cant remember what exactly my head cost, but it got a FULL reco + unleaded conversion. |

I think you need some psychiatric head help judging by some of the posts you put here ![]() I drove my mini for about a year with a blown head gasket... Always had oil in the water, but the tempo gauge never gets off 'C'. I dunno. ![]() I would say $500 is a good price, if you cannot do it yourself. Labour is expensive! Try to stretch the budget and get hardened valve seats put in it so you can run unleaded (or do you still have super down there? You are a bit behind the times) |

Assuming you have the head off I had a quote from an engineer, getting it shaved should cost $250. Port job $200. Was told they crack test etc while doing this. |

$30 - $40 sounds pretty close to the right price, it's a 10 min job to set up, $250 is outrageous! ![]() I am just lucky that all the machining work, rebuilders labor etc is free for me!!! ![]() If they recondition the head $500 is a good price, if they are just giving it a once over and shaving it get a $40 gasket kit off ebay, spend $50 - $90 on a torque wrench and do all the donkey work yourself, just get them to check the head. You will save a few $ and gain a torque wrench (always useful!) |

I would also do the Mechanic's myself...I have a number of times also. As long as you can find someone to do the work on the head for you I would get an ACL Head gasket thou...they are black with the Blue trace, Cant be missed Do you have Spanners and things Ben |

No mention of refacing valves and seats unless that's included price is a ripoff. Sounds dear to me anyway... I just got the boss's 1275LS one done. GR refaced 8 valves & seats $60, new guides $50, VRS gasket set $32. I did all the labour and decked the head too... ![]() |

Get them to spell out the work they are going to do, ie new guides, seals, thermostat, resurface, hot tank, crack testing, valves etcetera or they will treat you like an arab donkey. That way when you get a quote from one mechanic to the next they will know what they are quoting for, and you will know what you are getting. Don't discount Repco engineering workshops either. They ground the warped discs off of my Subaru WRX for 11 dollars a side (over the counter). |
