| Post subject: | Heat Shields - Do they really work |
Can anyone tell me if carburettor heat shields make much difference. 
Is worth investing in one? Or can I just make one out a piece of aluminium plate? I understand the principle of wanting to keep the fuel cool especially as the float bowl on an SU sits directly above the exhaust manifold and we do live in a country where the weather is hot and dry most of the year. |

They serve 2 purposes.. 1. If fuel leaks, it drips clear of the exhaust manifold/pipes. 2. They help stop the fuel getting too hot in the fuel bowls due to heat radiated from the exhaust. It will run without them, but may be more prone to vapour lock in traffic. Having said this, I just realised my Dellorto doesn't have or need one... 
You can make one out of steel, aluminium or S/S. There must be an air gap between exhaust-heat shield- bowl. |

Unless yer car is idling for extended periods of time(5 minutes or so) I dont think the heat shields are worth it. If I let my car sit and run, When I take off it wants to cough and fart until the fuel has passed through. And if ya consider, they really do make it a pain in the butt to get to anything when they are fitted. |
