My poor old mum had her car (daihatsu Cherade 1991 model) parked out the front of her house last week when it became the inocent victim of an accident. Two car collided and during the melee the smashed into the back of her car pushing it into the gutter and bending the rear whel underneath the car. Luckily teh guy who hit here was insured but the car has been declared a write off.

The insurance company delivered the car back to her house today and she has been told she will get a pissy $2,000 from the insurance company (Better than nothing I suppose).

So my questiosn are
1) Is anyone intersted in buying it? this car is in excellent mechanical condition. Every year we have spent $$$$ Servicing and looking after it because my mum works shift work and cant afford to be breaking down at 2am. It has 10 month rego (I think) and from what I have been told wouldnt take too much to fix it up again.

2) Would it be worth more if I striped it and sold it as bits.

3) Am I legally allowed to fix it and keep the car of the road if my mum has been paid out by the insurance company?

3- you can't re register it if its a statutory write off.

you certainly can fix the car but it probably isn't worth it, wrecking the car and selling for parts will take longer and involve a fair amount of work but return far more than selling as is .

Do not take the first offer from the insurance company.
Tell the other cars owner that you will not take the $2000 that the insurance company is offering and you want the car fixed.

Your mum had a roadworthy car and that is what you want from them.

Imagine if someone threw a rock through your window and then offered half the cost of fixing it. You would tell them to get stuffed! Why except it with a car?

The other persons insurance company can not write off a car that they do not own.

thanks Morris 1100. THe only problem is it's really tuff to deal with my mum. She's old and it's amazing that I even know this much. I'm sure sometimes she likes it when things turn to crap because them=n she has something to winge about. She wont put up a fight so we need to wrok with what we have.

if its a structural rite off there is o way u can re register it without bein dodgey, if its only a financial rite off it should be ok. ring up a few wreckers and get a price on the partsyou need . good luck

The rear suspension damage is probably just bent suspension arms and they would be fairly cheap to replace.
The body damage is the worry! It may just be a bumper or it may be stuffed!

My daugthers Charade was written off very easily....the tiny chassis rails at the rear just kinked....the car could have been straightened out I suppose but would have no strength in the event of another bingle....carefully examine underneath

Have to agree with Morris this happened to me and I was offered $1500 by the insurance for a 1200 coupe I fought this by writing a letter and showing evidence of the same cars for sale in different sources at around the $4000 mark.
They ended up paying me $3000 and it ended up costing me $200 and a BFG to repair the car [/quote]
