Post subject: | idling problems |
i was at Dave Obrien's place (guy who sold me my mini) www.bridalcars.com.au and he said that my idle was not right. he got rid of the inconsistent revving (too lean, so turned fuel up) but he said my revs are way too high: 1. turning the fuel right down/up didnt stall my engine - not good 2. putting it into 1st gives it a clunk that shocks the whole car - very not good nothing comes to mind for him, can anyone else help? i just replaced the plunger and rubber in my PCV. i think the plunger sticks sometimes there is a heap of air sucked through the breather hole and filler cap. pretty much nothing through the carby |

Autos are a bit tricky- you need to get them set to idle at 650rpm in gear. Yes, they do clunk when you engage drive, but if it's real bad either the revs are too high or the engine mounts-stready rubbers- exhaust mounting bracket have a problem. You should be able to remove the oil filler cap without it actually stopping..... ![]() I would temporarily disconnect the PCV valve's hose and plug the valve, then see if it's still sucking air. Sounds to me like your PCV valve is not closing down at idle, as it should. |

![]() My experience with Autos is that they do need to idle a little higher than what you would consider normal. There is a little "trick". When you have your foot on the brake at rest, you usually are only applying just enough pressure to hold the weight of the car and stop it rolling in nuetral or to take it out of park. Autos tend to increase engine revs once a gear is engaged to compensate for the natural drop in revs.....so Just before you slip into drive or reverse, gently squeeze a little harder on the brake pedal, then do the gearshift thing. With practice you will soon learn the correct "dab" on the brakes to lessen or remove the "clunk". Hope this helps ![]() |

yeh he owns the matic and a green clubman. he wanted to sell the matic but with little interest, i think his clubman is for sale. not sure 9YaTaH i kinda do that, i move the stick from N to 1 reeeaaal slow and put heaps of pressure on the brakes. most of the time its useless. argh ill try get this problem sorted this week. not sure with who though. |

i. i tried to disconnect PCV - turns, but wont fire. just like pulling out the 5th lead in the dizzy. ii. greased plunger of PCV (thinking it stuck). better, idling lower iii. really slacked choke and throttle cable, unwound tuning screws completely. idling down to minimum. engaging gear is less clunky, about half the shock and sound as before. 1) is there another way to reduce revs? 2) the breather hole is supposed to BLOW in a manual. is this the same with an matic, mines SUCKING. i dont mean to highlight the inuendos. |

If you are really concerned with your car duc, take it to see John Leffler at St George Streering in Punchbowl. He will go over it for you and tell you what is wrong. He has been working on mini's since they first came off the factory line and has forgotten more about mini's thatn i would like to know in a life time. |

There is a fast idle screw on the carb that is used to set idling speed. Check your manual. But like Aaron says, I think you best take it to an expert as it sounds like more than just your idle is of concern... |
