Post subject:  Accelerator pedal mounting
There are two nuts that mount my accelerator pedal bracket to the firewall.

Half of the bracket has snapped off, so the pedal doesnt work properly. I tried to replace it ages ago, but gave up, tonight i had a go at it again.. The nuts just turn and turn and get no closer to the end of the thread.

the bolt is not spinning with the nut.

Whilst trying to undo the nut, i am using a little pressure, but the nut has not undone in the slightest.

I cant get the damn thing undone, ive tried jaming a screwdriver behind it to force it onto this thread. Either the nut thread has rusted away or the bolt thread, but i cant force it off.


Has this happened to anyone else??

sorry man, you have to get it off now ,,,& also replace the captive bolts that go through the fire wall

Its probally been like this as long as ive had the car = 5 years +., but how the hell do i get it off? and putting new threads in???? gah. it would be easy if behind that bit of firewall was engine bay, but i think that area is unreachable with car assembled at least (covered by rubber cones or somthing).

P.S. These nuts and bolts do not look rusted and in general my car is pretty rust free.

Happened in my first mini! My Grandfather rethreaded the bolts, using some threading dies he had! Then just used smaller bolts after that

how do you get the nuts off to begin with though!!

Also, my grandfather is not as good as yours, where does one get bolts rethreaded?

I had that exact same problem yesterday the nut just kept on spinning and the bolt stayed stationary so i just left it for the time being, lucky i am in the process of stripping the whole car, i pulled the front subframe out today but haven't had a close look at the accelerator pedal bolts from the other side yet but i will do tomorrow and i'll get back to you. I suspect the nuts are stuffed and i'll probably just lop them off with the angle grinder and put new nuts and bolts in. Not sure what you can do though......it might be a bigger job than you thought.

i'd just grab the truty diegrinder and remove the lot in one go :twisted:
then drill it and replace the bolts but thats just me

Try driling the head out first and punching out or else grind head down punch it out then use a new piece of steel to mont two new bolts for a new mounting

Grrrrrr :x

Went to tighten bolts on accelerator pedal.
Found 1 already snapped off :(
Though "OK I can live with that I'll just tighten the remaining one"
and discover the thread on the bolt has been completely stripped :x

Does anyone know of a way of fixing this without removing the subframes :?:

Cause otherwise I am just going to bodge it for now and tack weld the pedal bracket to the bolt remnants so I can pass rego

perhaps use a big washer ?
