OK, Mini dudes, so what's yer favourite Mini camshaft, and what power band is it good for? I'm talking ROAD use, not pure race.... ![]() After running a Waggott 18/58 and 23/60, a Bert Jones, a BMC 544, a BMC 731, a Karcraft (Camtech) VP3, and lastly a Russell Engineering RE-13, I gotta say the latest is the greatest. Power band (1.5 rockers) is 2700- 7500+ with a 45 Dellorto throwing fuel at it.... ![]() |

Would love to be able to join this thread, SO i'll just say I have no bloody idea. All I know is my 1275 has a custom grind cam in there. Dunno what make it is or anything. My mate loves it's lumpy idle though ![]() |

As far as I know, Mine is a copy of DRMini's but with less overlap (overlap + Turbo = Bad....) I have to say, its probably the most "grumpy" cam I've ever had, under 2000, it farts, stalls, looses power etc etc etc... cold starting and running is a bastard.. But one press of the pedal at 3000 makes it all worth while.... all they way to the self-imposed 7500RPM rev-limit.... I used to run a stock 1100 cam in the 998 turbo, but since adding the Graham Russell RE-13 "smallbore-turbo variant" I woulndt go back.... being able to light the tyres in 3rd at 6000 is so much fun !! Its got the weirdest sound (and its one i noticed Kev's has when i drove his..)... Its like a broomstick hitting the floor over and over again... (gasses expanding/exploding in the pipes ?) until it gets onto the cam, then its just hang on time........ I had an X-U1 Spec 186 in my HG and I grabbed an Ivan Tighe "Custom" (gave him the specs over the phone and he made one up for me..) it was the sweetest cam I've ever owned.... 70/30 spec with about 0.500" lift !! revved to about 7000 and made lots of power, all while being very mild-mannered around the street (much like the famous 649 Special Tuning Cam..) Anyway, i should stop dringking and go to bed..... J |

Best road cam I have used was a regrind to the BMC544 profile. This was used in a 1380 with 45 webber. Power band from just over 2000rpm, started dropping off at 7250 rpm. Fantastic torque across a broad rev range, ideal for fast road use. Having said that I am going to try the Kent 296 profile. |

Mine's a Wade 446B cam. The guy who recommended it to me said he had only recently 'discovered' this cam and has used it in several minis since and loves it. I can't say what its like compared to anything else coz its the only one i've driven in the last 10 years. Duration 291, valve lift .340 (with standard rockers). has great power from about 2000 up (i haven't been past 6000 yet). planning to get it dynoed soon to see what its like... car's a 1330 S with 45mm Weber. Anyone else used this cam or something like it? GeoffP |

i got a BL731 with 1.5 rockers in my 1330. also can't compare to anything else, as i haven't driven anything else. it's been bagged on forums and in vizards book, but i don't care, the car is fun, and it sounds lumpy and cool at idle. pulls hard from 2500, and i've had it dynoed at 72hp@wheels @5500 |

I took Mr Calvers advice and am about to huck a Swiftune SW-5 into the Clubby - now this is definitely going to throw the plans for the 1.5:1 forged rockers...I rode in a 998cc up in QLD with one of these cams and they are sweet as a nut - not too over the top but gave a very noticable jolt about 3-3500rpm. This said though the power came on from about 1700rpm right through to what we went to at 6000rpm. Scary that 1 litre can scare you so much(or maybe it is the driver??) Skins |

Well, my first mini had an 1100 (+30 thou) with a 731 cam in it..... i LOVED the idle sound, but it was slower than a stocky datsun 1000 coupe.... i'm guessing the cam was a tooth out..... unfortunately i sold the car before i could check it.... Am getting a Kent 286 cam for the 1380... absolutely NO IDEA how it will perform. |

Am getting a Kent 286 cam for the 1380... absolutely NO IDEA how it will perform. I rebuilt a 1380 last Xmas for my mate `Baracade'- it has a Kent 286, with offset bushed S forged rockers, 45DCOE carb, stage 3 head, and Perry extractors. We got about 110HP at crank, and 100 lb/ft torque, on Graham Russell's engine dyno. ![]() It goes OK, but I think my 1310 is faster... ![]() |

Sue's "Morris" is much the same but with +60 and a HIF44. I had it dyno'd some time ago now and we got 45bhp at the wheels at a well knowen tight dyno. New gear box going in real soon and a possible change in diff may even get the head a little touch up ![]() Would love to try a RE13 or SW5 |

I think the SW5 is overrated. You can get an RE13 easy & cheap, give me a cam to grind on & I'll arrange it next week. ![]() |
