Hoping someone might know this fault?
Car initially runs sweet. After roughly 100kms a steadily increasing intermittant loss of power begins to occur. This eventually gets worse until it fails to run.

The actual cause of this was the contact for the coil (ontop of the rotor button) is "electrically" corroded as are the contacts on the distributor cap. Once these are filed clean it's back to reliable running. Of course I can't keep doing this.

On investigation the coil was found to have a leak and was replaced the same time as the rotor button and cap. This seemed to fix the "result", but not the cause given this fault persists. I could continue and not worry if I change or file clean the cap and button every 100kms or so.

Resistance on the coil lead was ok (4.5) and the voltage at the battery (13.8) so these dont appear to be the problem. The engine has not long been out for professional rebuild and appears to have done more than 1000kms before any sign of this fault. Engine grounding seems ok too.

Anyone got any ideas please. Note this is a Rover EFI model.

Thanks

is it the right coil tho...
could have a high energy coil in there and not one with a ballast resistor..
you may find that the capacitor (can't remember the real name) in your dizzy may be shot also.

Can you try a different dizzy :?: should sort out if it is there or somewhere else.

Does the Pulsar dizzy work for EFI rovers? I am guessing so if they use a points distributor.

A lot of issues with EFI cars are earth related. Make sure you have good earth contacts at all points. I would bet there is more than one. IIRC the SD1 Rover had about 13 around the motor.

Sounds like something you might expect a battery terminal to do. Notwithstanding some high frequency effect from the buzzing of the coil, it sounds like an issue of dissimilar metals or so,maybe chemical reactions on the contact. If it works on battery terminals, you might try excluding oxygen from the contact by covering with vaseline or similar grease.
Firstly though I would try changing the connector out with a replacement.

Need to check the coil discharge time, base timing and the voltage output of the coil.
Also check your alternator output as it affects the computers running.

It would appear to be an installation problem, wouldn't it. So check all earths with a meter and check that all earths are present and accounted for. It may look like the earth is OK but I would want to check with a meter. It may be a case of completely removing all connections from the motor and making sure they are all doing what they should, that being making good connection. Electrical integrity is absolutely essential with efi. I am assuming that the problem did not exist before the motor removal.

Look at some of the jap imports... they run up to 5 earth cables.
also earthed high tension leads...
check the computer earth by the booster.
Has the computer been reset after the motor was installed?

Yes, I would lay odds on an earthing problem.
Check, check, check again.

But first, reset computer (disconnect battery for 1/2 hour or more) as this is easy to do

Disconnecting the battery for a while doesn't get rid of the codes inside(learner computer).
Maybe the computer thinks you still have a buggered coil. Only sure way to check is to plug in diagnostics.
