Post subject:  Central Locking
Hi. I'm thinking of putting it in my clubman. I think it was MiniPortal that i read it on.
What is needed to install it? Does one need to make custom brackets? Can one fiddle sticks it up?
Would it be worth it to just pay (strathfield) someone to do it?

Yes you will need custom brackets. Yes you can fiddle sticks it up, if you put too much stress on the motors they won't last. Don't get somebody else to do it, they might be just capable of getting your odd Camry to have central locking, but a Mini is a real challenge, they will stuff it up.

Last time I looked at the difficulties of fitting central locking to Chris' Clubman, we decided the best spot for the motor would be under the quarter vent window above the winder with some in-depth linkages to make it work. The room is tight, but it can be done.

Is there a link bar on the locking solenoid? How does this connect to the rod that locks the door.

It's been a while I can't exactly remember how we were going to do it! From memory a bar from the solenoid running parallel with the bar from the internal lock to the mechanism, then connected together with the suitable bracket that comes in the kit. Might have to bend the rod from the solenoid a bit so as to avoid strain on the solenoid (you don't want it to have to 'push' to hard or it will break).

may i ask what will you lock with your central locking?
the drivers side, passenger side, and boot in one press?

and im not sure how the clubman boots are, but roundies boots and drivers side locks are ones youve got to turn the key 180 degrees...
not sure how a central locking (up n down) mechanism will suit

I have central locking in my mini, Placement was right .. underneath the quaterglass.

Not too hard to fit, i did it so i would have keyless entry as i have an alarm as well.

Didn't use anything special, just had a bit of trouble getting the locking lever to be pulled hard enough to lock the door. I could take some pics if u like.. its pretty dodged up at the moment but works ok for me..

do you realise the central locking will double the number of wires in your mini????

Unless the locking kit has a transmitter/reciever/remote kit included, you may need to buy an alarm aswell to have remote central locking on arm and disarm....

I've been told the trick is use 2 LH door locks- that way you just move the little locking lever... :wink:

Not if you have a van - climb in through the back doors! :D

I have been experiemnting with two spare windup window doors, using a passenger side lock in the drivers side. Only problem is that when you flip the lock upside down it works in reverse to the other door. Instead of push up to lock like the pass. side it is pull down to lock. Maybe there is a way of dismantling th lock and reversing the mechanism, but I have not tried it yet.

I mounted the locking motors in the door pocket at the bottom of the door. This means you have to cut away some of the door trim and make up a cover for the motor. No big deal.

I haven't sorted out how to lock the doors when the battery is flat yet... I want some sort of manual button/lever on the inside of both doors...

here's how i've done mine
i'll get some pics of it later on today, but i'll try describe it:

central locking motor under 1/4 glass. i used a long piece of thick wire, and run it from the motor, all the way to the locking mechanism, and it gets wrapped around the little part that the control rod from the remote bolts into

to make sure teh wire doesn't buckle or anything, what i did is just to the rear of the remote, i cut a slot in the door, and the wire comes out and runs parallel with the original control rod from the remote. i've taped them together every 10cm or so.

what you have to check though, is the point in the master motors motion that triggers it's internal switch, (what makes it lock/unlock) and bolt it all together so it all works in harmony.

never ever had a reliability issue with it.

make sure u do the keyless entry. opening a mini with a button on your keys turns plenty of heads :) chicks dig it :P

alright - all this talk has got me hooked!

any1 know where i can get this done on my rover mini?
would certainly love to have a keyless entry like the toyotas...while im at it mayb i;ll chuck in an engine immoblizer as well...

hey ryan i tihnk someone in the uk does a kit specially designed to fit rover doors....you might be able to get hold of one of them.......could well save you a stack of time and effort
