Post subject:  Timing Chain...

Hi all, i was wondering if the timing chain on an 1100 can be tensioned. I have done this on cars I have owned in the past and was curious about the mini. Does anyone have any thoughts about doing this?

As far as i'm aware, later minis had a tensioner. To fit this you would need the complete backing plate and gears etc, I think, as the timing cover was different.

I have also seen reference to the neoprene tensioner rings for the cam gear used on simplex (single) timing chains. This shouldn't require many mods but i am unsure of the effectiveness.

Best bet is to use a duplex chain (and Gears) as this will help to eliminate the chain stretch, therefore no tensioner required. This will require the backing plate countersinking and the two bolts holding it to the block near the crank gear replaced with allen beaded bolts (countersunk).

Cheers

Are those the bolts that have to be countersunk :?:

Tensioner was used on the A+ engines. Designed for the simplex chain. Won't stop it stretching, just rattling....
Better to go for the duplex, they last a lot longer than the simplex.
Or if you have $$$ to spare, get a belt drive kit like mine... :P
