Hi,

I have what I was told was a cooper s camshaft. It is a pin drive, 1/2" lobe cam, the only id mark I can find anywhere is the code 691A stamped into the end (the front or timing chain end)

Any ideas?

Cheers
Matt

If it's 1/2" lobes and pin drive it is probably either a Cooper S, or a late Sprite Mk 2A cam.
Same thing really. Not exciting...

Are there any marking rings on it near front or back?

No marking rings and nothing stamped anywhere except the end as mentioned.

Thanks doc.

Is this a good basis for regrinding, or will it be better to buy a new one with more lift?

Cheers

If it's a Cooper 'S' cam it wont have a cam to drive a mechanical fuel pump, it will have 1/2" wide lobes, pin drive oil pump, may or may not have a ring (raised ridge) machined between lobes 7&8. The original AEG148 cam doesn't have the ring, the later AEG510 cam does.
The AEG148 cam has 5/45 deg inlet valve timing, the AEG510 has 10/50 deg inlet vale timing. Exhaust timing is 10/50 deg in both cases.

Thanks Ron,

I should have thought of it. There is no fuel pump 'cam' so I would say it is an 'S' cam after all. No rings, 1/2" wide lobes and pin drive so it would be the AEG148 Cam.

Any ideas why it would have "691A" stamped into the end of it?

Would it be worth asnyhting to someone as is, or can I get it reprofiled without ruining something sought after?

Matt68,
Sorry, I may have misled you about the fuel pump lobe. As the Doc says it may be from a Sprite. Just because it doesn't have the fuel pump lobe doesn't mean it is from an 'S'. Other non Min A series engines didn't have mechanical fuel pumps either. The mechanical pump is a late comer from around 1965 and first appeared in OZ in the Mini Deluxe. Prior to this all OZ Minis had electric SU pumps on the rear subframe.
I don't know what the 691A means. It could have been reground and that is the regrinders number. Wade Cams stamp the grind profile there. eg 140, 240 etc. It could just be a factory number to indicate who or on what machine it was ground on. Could be anything.

Could be a Camtech `619'. Also known as their VP3..
I had one- good cam, until it wore the lobes out..

If the lobe base circles are a bit above the base body of cam and the lobes are not worn on top, yes it can be reground. I have an RE-13 here- that was the 4th grind from new, & it's still good. 8)

So how do I find out the profile now? Is it a specialist equipment job?

Matt,
If you take it to a cam grinder eg Russell Eng, Wade, or Ivan Tighe, they can probably check it properly.

You could set it up in a motor with a degree wheel and dial gauge but it's a PITA and won't really tell you what it is, as you don't know the checking clearance used.

Unless it's mint, I would just regrind it to a known performance profile (eg. RE-13). Particularly if (like a Camtech 619) it has pretty sharp lobes.

<edit> BTW Camtech do stamp them there on the front, it's probably a 619 with a typo.

Are any of those cam grinders you mentioned in Brisbane?

I don't need this cam for the current engine build (as it's already got a reprofiled cam, and is in the car now) but would like to use it in the next one 8) 8)

I suppose I could ship it to them some time when I'm getting ready for the next engine build.

Thanks Doc and Ron R!!

see http://tighecams.com.au/cars.htm

I've got a Tighe 104 in Barney's 1293 A+, with Corolla rockers and twin HS4s.
It's not a bad cam, but I do wish I'd put an RE-13 in while motor was out...
