 I was very curious as to get some minis doing a hot lap at the 2005 Clipsal 500 event. Here is the reply.

Hi Will

Thanks for your email. Please note that I have forwarded your enquiry onto the Clipsal 500 Adelaide Special Events and Operations Manager for his consideration.

Kind regards

Felicity

Subject: Mini event

Hello, I was just wondering if it would be the slightest possible to include a Mini parade around the Clipsal circuit. There are two main Mini clubs in South Australia and I think an event that could show off our Minis would be excellent.
There could be at least 50 minis that would take part in the event, and most of them being road cars.
A simple parade around the circuit would be ideal, as maybe a filling event between races.
I am sure that this would attract a lot of people to come and see the real classic cars.

Thankyou for your time,
Will Gormly.

Lets see how this evolves.

Too much fsck around with CAMS licencing, liability, blah blah blah.
It'd just cost too much for them to do.

Minis are often seen in the Historic event. Along with the Cortinas, and that.
But no-one goes to clipsal to see Minis.
Really.

Getting cars on the racetrack between events is a major hassle for organisers.

Firstly, the cars need to be parked somewhere in the racetrack for the whole day, then they need to be moved from that location, thru the crowd to the access gates. After their parade lap, they will need to be driven thru the crowd once again to their parking location.

Its a big public liability issue for the organisers.

Whats worse, the cars need to be INSIDE the circuit before the public arrives (8am), and they cant leave until after the final event on the day (and thats late if there is a night race).

When you are parked inside the event, the cars are not behind fences or anything, people can walk between them (possibly scratching, stealing, or breaking something)

I went thru all this crap a few years ago with the Mazda. We were not allowed to do a parade lap, but at the end of the Sunday night we got ourselves onto the circuit and did a lap anyway, stopping on the start/finish grid for some photos. Naturally, we were told to get out. Got some good photos though (and some air time on TV too  )

Me on the grid, orange and blue lights (shut up, they are gone now)

I rekon it would be.

I thought the majority of mini clubs in Australia, were registered/affiliated with cams, hence being able to organise track days. I dont know the legalities but I would assume that they would already possess cams licensing, and arent registered car clubs as organisation supposed to have liability insurance? As I said I dont know legalities... Just a thought

Cheers
Mark

I know if my mini was on the road I would consider travelling interstate to be a part. So I rekon you could have greater numbers with tag alongs.

Our club in Canberra is not CAMs affiliated...thats about $1500 per year and with less than 100 members at the moment ....thats a lot of money for a social club that doesn't have many people interested in Motorsport!!

Public Liability Insurance is also reasonably expensive but clubs need to have it in case someone trips over a Mini at a show etc and files a claim ...say 600...900...per year.

If there is still a grand prix to be held in australia, wonder if something can be organised for mini's 50th anniversary. Now thatwould be a way to celebrate :D

No.....not really.

To get out of the event, we had to drive onto the circuit thru one gate, drive up a bit, then out thru the next open gate. But we went straight past the exit and kept heading around the circuit.

And no, our club was not CAMS affiliated, or insured. Just a boy racer club with 10 members (or more like a cafe racer club. ). We were just very lucky to have ALOT of friends in high places

Why not go for the Holy Grail....Bathurst has feature events and parades throughout the 4 days.....if you do try and get something going up there .....ask for help from the Mini Clubs around Australia .....
