| Post subject: | Oil Flush treatments |
I was chatting with a mechanic recently about Oil Flush treatments. He was doing a song and dance about them, saying that with modern synthethic oils, they are essential. Apparently synthetic oils leave a hard residue on engine components, and you MUST flush your oil regularly (his words, not mine) What do others think about this? Is it necessary in modern cars? Is it advisable in an older car? I was thinking about doing one in Pops, since he was standing around for 5 years undriven.

my take on them, is not to bother. if you need to flush the oil, get cheap stuff drive it round a bit, dump it and put good stuff in. putting a flush in with old oil that is as black as tar, in my minds eye isn't going to do squat. home brand oil is a cheap and easy way to flush your oil i think. Flushing will just loosen the crud & sludge in there quick, if any... could block things up. Go buy a few cans of cheapo 20W/50 oil- put in with new filter, run until it starts to go dark, change oil & filter. If rings are good, after a few oil changes it will stay cleaner for longer.

Hi Anton, I can remember reading about this in other threads as other people have brought this up as I was thinking of doing this to Granny.. But after reading through all the threads the generally impression I got from the messages was it was bad for our Mini's. So I decided against it.. The threads should should still be on the forum somewhere. I just dont have them handy.. So it might be an idea to do a search and see what you think after reading them  .
I also remember many years ago a mechanic freind of mine telling me how he once did this to an old Escort he use to have and it ruined his engine  ..

yea I was always anti-oil flushes....I alwas said it was a money grab by new car dealer servicing departments

If you MUST do it, just use some diesel fuel to cut the oil with 50/50.. drive around for a day or 2 then drain it. But I would never do this if engine/box was real old & cruddy inside.
