I am currently planning on buying/building a trailer to transport my race mini.

Has anybody out there been though the process and have any tip for me :?:

I was thinking of something like a golf cart trailer, single axle with brakes that tilts.

Any thoughts and/or pics much appreciated

Minimad

Ok...I would probably want it wide enough that i did not have to drive over wheel arches

A few questions

How does it 'fold up'?

Has it got brakes?

Usually people would put some bar work around the edge to stiffen the flat tray up. You have any problem with flex in the trailer without it?

Minimad

Ps the Aluminum checkerplate looks great...might have to steal that idea

That looks like a neat trailer. I love ally floor plate - used it on my trailer too!

Just a suggestion Mad, but if you used 10" mini wheels, you could perhaps get away without wheel arches

I have been seriously considing 10" wheels as I have a ton of them lying around the place.

Problems are :

Single axle will be over the weight limit that I will need for it to be legal in all states

Dual axle is more weight, friction on the road and more expenive to set up...and really isn't required with a mini!!!

Also brakes would have to be hydrolic with original mini componentry and no one in the trailer industry that I have talked to will advise me on what hitch to use as they want you to buy there after market brake package.......which will not fit 10" wheels

Has anybody modified the handbrake lever to make a machanical override system for 10" wheels :?: :?:

I would still use mudgards at the side as I want the trailer as low as possible (less distance for the car to fall  )

They are a neat design, but you might be pushing the 750kg mark even with a race mini.
A street mini would defiantely push you over that mark.

How much does your trailer weigh with the ally floor Wayne?

Wow :o That is light
If you kept the weight down you could use it for a "real" mini even 8)

Here's my trailer

It a really simple trailer, made out of 2 by 1 inch tube with 1 inch square to brace & take the weight of the mini, then mess over the top.

Don't use 10 inch wheels, they get hot & blow tyres, i run 15 inch commodore rims, never had a problem with them & they are available everywhere.

Its rigid & runs no brakes, the trailer weighs 220 kg empty, it tows fantastic, it very docile it sits on 170 kph with the mini on no problems (only did that once)

Heres a pic with the car on it.

I like it!

How do you get out of it after you drive it on? There doesn't look like there is enough clearance between the trailer guards and the doors.

Also what is the floor dimensions? That looks about perfect for a mini

Nice trailer :)

but 220kg + 638kg for a mini = 858kg
that's 108kg over the limit for an unbraked trailer.

I know it can be done, but not legally

Single axle is legal as long as you have axles, springs, tyres and wheels heavy duty enough to tow the weight. You do not need tandem axles for Mini transport.

I used to tow Minis on a trailer that formerly transported a small bobcat. It was 500kg empty with electric brakes, rated to 1500kg Gross. It was basically like a heavy duty box trailer without tailgates either end, 8.5 foot by 5.5 foot on the tray. It was really overkill for a Mini and you could not open the doors because the sides were too high. Not really a problem with a van though - just use the rear doors instead. :)

Now I have a 10 foot by 5.5 foot single axle car trailer with hydraulic brakes, 1500kg springs, weights 450kg empty. It's transported Minis, morris 1100s etc without any problem. It cost $700 at a swap meet about six months back and is similar in design to the one shown by "2 S and a Clubman" above.

Both trailers are/were running 13" torana rims with light truck tyres. Never had a problem with tyres.

You either climb out of the window or push it on, its a pain but a small price to pay for its low centre of gravity, dimesions are

Overall length 4330mm
" " width 2180mm

Flat car area

length 2750mm
width 1580mm
