Post subject: | Door Handles - why are they different? |
I was just wondering from looking at the pics of your Aus minis that your door handles are totally different to ours in the UK. You have big flat ones and the lock is seperate, below the handle. Where as ours is a slim metal one which sits proud of the door panel and has the lock included in it. any ideas why yours are so different? ![]() |

70s design change. You can see them on other Leyland cars... like the Kimberly ![]() They were also used on very late model Mini Ks, as well as our Leylands. ![]() |

Australian Design Rules came in the 70's and it was found that handles proud of the door have the nasty tendency to skewer pedestrians onto them and drag them along - the flush handles are meant to stop that from happening. You poms never needed the safer handles as you havent got any pedestrians - they've all moved down the road from me to Coogee and Bondi. |

Interesting fact - I found some pictures of a "safe" Mini prototype from the late 60's, and guess what, it had our Clubby door handles! |

ahh i thought it might be do to them sticking out. thanks for the explaination mike. personally i dont think they look as nice, or elegant as the original sticky out ones mind. |

oh i think another main reason is to meet a minimum australian content quota, like the windows, switch panel etc |
