I'm off to go look at a 997 cooper tomorrow just a shell no original engine/disc barkes etc, I was just wondering bar the YKA2S1 prefix and the usual sliding windows 100 mph speedo etc are there any other distinguishing features I should look for that would seperate it from an 850? Any help/suggestions would be most appreciated.

The magic wand gearstick hole is the obvious one. if the original hole for the magic wand is still there, or the hole has had a plate welded in tread carefully. Australian Coopers simply never had the hole pressed in the first place so nothing should show of it.

Check to see that the remote stick hole is neatly cut and not simply been out of the 850's floor pan.

Pretty obvious stuff, I hope you don't mind.


<edit> Nice to have but not guaranteed as they can be taken off - Check for three piece stainless steel mouldings down the sides. Also, around the window frames will be a unique type of stainless mouldings as well, completely different to any other mini in Oz. If they are missing, they are held on by popriveted clips (I think about a dozen or so). These clips are like cup washers and should still be around the frame facing outwards


These clips and mouldings are now available from the UK quite cheaply, but once were the rocking horse crap cos of the appendix J cars needing them.

997-998 Coopers had a chrome strip around the top of the doors. 850 never did. :wink:

Thanks for the quick replies, I'll make sure to check the floor pan as you said MIck and don't worry something so obvious to you is probably unknown to me its all helpful. This chrome strip dr, the shell has been totally stripped and blasted should I find lugs where it would have been? I'll keep you in mind for the engine too miniman gotta get the shell first though. Been 30+ years since I looked at one, but didn't the cooper have a 110mph speedo?, the cooper S a 120, and the others a 100 all with black face, except the 850 which had a cream/white faced 90mph?

850, deluxe, etc = 90 MPH
Cooper 997, 998 = 100 MPH
Cooper S 1275 = 110 then 120 MPH

As with the Cooper S, the Cooper 997 should have a boot board.

It is different from the Cooper S as it goes right across (only one tank).

Look for the brackets in the boot on the back seat. They should be factory spot welded on. It they aren't there look for the welds!

(If anyone has a factory Cooper 998 boot board for sale I'd be very interested by the way.)

I dont know HEAPS about coopers, BUT..

Mick im not sure if you're right because weren't the earliest 997s CKD?? I don't know the extent of the CKD operation but I reckon they'd be the same as period 850 - which means that they'd have english style blanking plates on the wand hole...Besides, it might be a private import english-made 997, in which case it definitely would have a blanked hole.

I know what you're saying because Cooper S/Deluxe/K shells have no pressing but they were scratch made here in Australia.

My 2 bobsies - whatever the case i wouldnt be immediately dismissive of a blanking plate.

Yeah you're right Misty, the earliest ones were CKD from England so they may indeed have a filled in hole. That's why I said to tread carefully, as they were in a pretty small minority, but anything is possible.

I've never seen one of the REAL early ones myself, but there aren't that many 997s around anymore.
