Fixed and altered, lots of things, i dont remember all, he was going to give me a 'job card' but he hadnt printed it off as yet.

Got 2 new hoses (heater i think)
Tappet Cover gasket
New thermostat and radiator flush
Fiddling with the carby, plugs and points and tuning - adjust tappets,

he fiddled and made it work as well as he could

There still needs a new clutch, When the car is idling in neutral, clutch in, try to get into gear, there is an almost hissing, whining noise, and i dont try to force it into gear like that.
But the clutch is not good.

Distributor shaft is worn a bit, so it needs replacing

I got told that the throttle linkage shaft was worn/stuffed, as well as the choke not returning with a cable, so if i need choke i have to jump out and put some on.
Also the manifold and carby gaskets need replacing as there is quite a few air leaks,
Im going to get a whole new carby, because mine is filthy.
and the thermometer doesnt read correctly
the handbrake also isnt releasing properly.

But he said it wont get working too flash until the carby gets attened to, but it should be much better than it was before,
which is good, as it will be driven everyday as now, until i get another old car, then it will be an every 2nd day car.

it all cost me $230, it was in for 8 days, i dont know if it were worth it, i dont really care, they were trust worthy enough mechanics, and i am, and they said, if i get parts theyd fix it up for me,

SO i needs me a new clutch and carby and attatchings - and possibly a new/replacement distributor.
What can you do for me>?

I think im going to be much nicer to the poor car now, i now fully understand that being mean to it was a bit silly.

Hmm, why a new carby? Just pull yours off and give it a good cleanup then put a kit through it. Actually steam clean your entire engine bay first :wink:

Like I said find a Pulsar dizzy and do that conversion any replacement Lucas dizzy you get is likely to be on it's way out as well. You will be surprised by how well the pulsar dizzy fits and how easy the conversion is. :wink:

I got told about a carby kit from bloke at work, he put one through his V8 HQ 8) , and said i ought to get one in that mini, and a user here, i think its 'MiniK'>> :?:
he has in his signature PM for carby kits, ill investigate.
I am prepared to spend an 'amount' to get it up to good everyday easy driving, with a clutch and distributor.
and something with a carby.

BUT
please tell me what a 'kit' consists of?
I mean why wouldnt it be the same as buyiung a good clean second hand one off a trustworthy member here, and getting new gaskets and sealant so on, ? getting rid of all my air leaks.

And with the Pulsar dizzy, what is teh process?
bolt off, bolt on? That easy :? :?:
i wont do it anyways,
But can you tell me exactly all the bits that is needed for the conversion,
as then i will take it to the mechanic, and he will fix it all up.

i went into town today
For the first time in ages, i didnt have to 'vrooom vroooom vroooom' at the traffic lights, to prevent the car from cutting out.
It just purred like a nice thing :P .

its a real bastard to get into gear when idle in neutral, there is a small window of opportunity to get into 1st at about walking speed, if i dont make it, i have to turn off the car to get it into gear again, I blame that on the clutch, It doesnt feel/sound good at all, it needs pretty 'quick' attention i am guessing :P

It took ages to get going in the morning, i thuoght i wasnt starting with a choke, cause i thought the cable didnt work, It turns out that the choke was well on the entire time, so it is now completely off, but i re-attatched the cable so ill be able to get away quicker in the morning.
But the choke wont return when it is attatched :? it just gets stuck , but i need it to start, so im going to have to let it warm up and and flick it off, until that is attended too :!:

i only have one registered car now :!: Its so strange just having the mini, very reflective time :roll: 8)

BUT thats a mini story.
They are a ripper fun car, unbelievable - i must have forgotten :P such a 'fine' feeling knowing i have to go and get in it tomorrow :arrow: ,

and never did i pamper the magna :x :lol:

Minis are tuff cars, and can handle a fair bit of neglect
but it will kill them eventually.

Be nicer to it in future :D

I think you are going down the right road Camel.
You will have a most tuff mini with just a few things fixed.

Take it there
1st time ever that i had green stuff in the radiator.
Its kills itself.
For the trip to and from Longford.
I put about 10 Litres in :shock: :x
For the first 12 months of ownership , i didnt even open the radiator :oops: .
and there were no problems.
only recently i started adding a small amount of water ever so often
i never had a temp sensor, working well.
So i wasnt used to temp reading more than about an eighth of the way up.
When i looked down after about 30 miles of driving toward Logford, and it was abuot 3/4 of the way up :? :shock: i near crap myself :oops:
What the hell :?: :!: .
pulled over had a look, fine enough.
I think i cut back the speed here, instead of hammering along as i always do, and flicked the bonnnet up to let some cold in.
got to launny, drove about a bit and it was nudging the H mark :shock: :?
stopped for a few minutes and it went down a bit.
Then set off again

Coming out of the hill from Launny, i had complete power loss going up hill and had to stop off the road
where i undid the radiator cap
and it was steaming like a smouldering hay fire :shock: :shock: ,
unbelievable it was.
WHY The hell shuold this happen, after i just had a flush and new thermostat>? :x :evil: :!:
Melted the temp sensor completely

I had a bit over 2L of water in mini in bottles.That was no where near enough, i waved a bloke down who chucked about 1.5L more in, and it were full.
Got to longford (20 kays more) And it was on the way again.
Whacked heaps more in, Josh helped.
went on the short cruise abot the countryside, came back and whacked almost another litre in it :shock: :!:

There are NO leaks :!:

Josh them took the thermostat out,
Found there wasnt a gasket on the thermostat houseing?
And thouhgt good, that may be problem solved.

So off i went home, driving between 50-60 mph with bonnet up
i pulled over in Devonport. ( 60 miles down the road) and the radiator cap was COLD :!:
Drove the further 50 miles home, when i pulled up
she was steaming again :x :!:

then this morning i went out and it gobbles up 2 litres more of water :!:
again,
no leaks.
no nothing
its just so bloody thirsty for water, unbelievable.

however, i was gettting better than 35 mpg when i travelled at slower speeds instead of 70-80 mph, almost 40 actually :wink:
so that is good
ill drive slow now :!:

I thought
id get another car soon so i can have the mini and sort out its problem slowly.

So i bought one - 1972 Toyota corona Mk II 2L 6 cyl, auto
and cooked it on the way home :roll: :evil:

mini will be taken to work tomorrow, and corona can get a flushing :!:

You have no luck with cars Camel, or maybe it's the cars that don't have any luck with you :lol:
Start by steam cleaning your engine bay then take it to a radiator place and get it pressure tested to find the leak (I know you said it's not leaking but it's a pressurised system, the water has to be getting out somewhere) They'll be able to sort it out with a recore or new one if needed. Also how do the upper and lower hose look, if they're even slightly dodgy replace those too.
Could also be the water pupm dying as well so if the radiator checks out replace the pump.

and im not very impressed with anything
you havent heard about my 'new' car either
so :!:

But i took it back to the mechanic today
and said
Not good.

And he couldnt believe it

He IS a genuinely nice bloke and good mechanic and i completely trust him
yet
he missed something?

He now says there is a chance it might be a head/head gasket.
He said hed get the radiator checked
and the head if it isnt the gasket.

But he had it so nicely fixed.
It lasted 2 days i think, and then it started to cook again

But he did the compression tests, all fine, The plugs were clean, no water in oil, it was all good, and he tuned it up pretty nicely, yet
It still ate so much water :evil: :!:

BAD MINI :!:

camle there is a little hose at the back between the head and the water pump i have a feeling that it may have a hole or the clamps are loose other wise just sus ya other hoses and make sure the clamps on them are tight

Well

The monster goes back in again this afternoon
to face its undiagnosed issues.

all the hoses were 100% complete and clamped.
so
it was
very unknown to all what may be wrong,
Only left is to pull the silly thing apart,
So the radiator is likely to get tested
and the head will get whatever work needs doing
Yet, there are no other symptoms at all to indicate head problems

BUT
its gone

even on the small 4-5 kay drive in,
gee its a great car to drive 8) :lol:
ive been driving the family hiace all week (last too), and thats not so much of a little car,
and sitting in the mini, almost draggin the backside on the ground :shock: :lol: gee it made me laugh :(
I think i need two minis :( one for if the other one is buggered :!:

Gee Camel this is not good news :(...

I hope you get your Mini sorted out soon though :). With a bit of luck it might be just a radiator problem..

But I like your idea of two Minis though :)..
