Ok i was just wondering if anyone knew the correct road rules and regulations for a P plater driving a light truck (GMV < 4.5t) with a trailer. In SA, there are no restrictions, but i thought i might investigate; just in case. So yep. Also for VIC and ACT too... does anyone know? Cheers in advance. |

regulations apply to the state that you are licensed in...i think, so the rules may be different in NSW but you follow the rules of SA blake 
oh, back of my licence..... C=vehicle seating up to 12 adults. to 4.5 tonnes. tractor. implement R=motor cycle.

In NSW a 4.5 tonne truck would reqire a MR (medium rigid) licence, depending on the length of the truck & trailer it may even reqire a HC (heavy combination). So on P plates not a chance in hell of legally driving it in NSW. Doogie |

Its a light truck with GMV of less than 4.5 tonnes. Its a Mazda, 2 litre, tray big enough to fit mini on

 Thats rubbish.
There is one Mini going on the tray, and one front cut and one half cut coming on the trailer. There *might* be room for another - but it'd add weight and there mightn't be any more room. PM brickworx and see if he'll let ya

There is a weight limit on the trailer that a P plater can tow in NSW. I think it is about 250kg, but don't quote me, All I do know is that you will get busted if you drive the truck let alone tow the trailer. |

If both the truck and trailer are registered in SA (and that is also where you are licensed) and SA regulations allow you to drive there you should be ok to drive around australia... twice if you like

You are joking aren't you. So if you are licensed in a state that has a blood alchohol limit of .08 and you are driving in a state with a limit if .05 and got caught with a reading of .07 in that state you are not breaking the law? I don't think so.

Seams to be 2 different issues here being mixed up here - Licencing and local road rules 1. Is willy licenced to drive the truck? In SA it's under 4.5T so Yes, therefore anywhere in Aust under his SA licence = Yes as well. [by the way, the regs in NSW and SA regarding weight limits etc are identical so willy would qualify to drive it if he was born a new south welshman as well, but the accepted rule Oz wide is that Licencing is relivant to the issuing State's licencing rules] 2. Does willy have to obey any and all the local NSW Road Rules while driving in NSW - you bet your ass he does. And he still has to display his SA Red P-pale and comply with any other restrictions he may have imposed on his SA licence as well. [because licencing is relivant to the issuing State's licencing rules] The one about the trailer weight limit is the one that is interesting. I have found offical reference to the NSW 250kg rule referred to earlier on the web but is that a local road rule or is it a licencing permission? So willy driving the truck in NSW is all OK, but ... towing the trailer as well is ... unknown. |

willy in nsw it is illegal to tow a trailer on your p's no matter what state you are from as that is the regulation in nsw in sa the gross mass of a truck is higher than in nsw BUT if i load legaly in sa dont mean i will be leagal when i enter nsw so no YOU cannot drive the truck with a traler in nsw ....... were as you can drive to the nsw border as i think in victoria p platers can tow a trailer and also i think they can do 110 in said sign posted area in nsw you have to stick to either 90 or 100 if you have had your licence over a year you can drive 100 under a year 90 ..... also if you get fined in nsw you only cop the fine and not the points ....another thing is you can act natrall and act dum

Ok here is the deal in NSW red P plates = no trailer, not sure bout truck Green p plates = trailer with wait less then 500kg, small truck under 4.5tonnes GVM thats the rules, |

i am pretty sure you need to be on your full licence to drive a truck |
