Just got the new project engine back from the machine shop (Richardsons) and about to start assembling it. They reground the crank, rebored the block and supplied all new bearings, Hypatec 73mm piston set ($168) and Hastings rings ($72).

Spec is as follows:

1275 (1100S) block bored +094
GRE13 cam
MS Isky followers
MS Superflow oil pump
Rollmaster adjustable timing gears
12G940 head ported and gasflowed by Airflow Developments
36/31, Terrys d/springs, 10:1 CR

Oselli Torquemaster manifold
HIF 44 carb fitted with MS stub stack and K&N cone filter
MS 1.5 forged rockers
Ron Brownriigg extractors with exhaust wrapping
RC40 twin box

MK1 Cooper S distributor with re-curved advance and fitted with Lumenition
Bosch GT40R coil
Accel 8mm spiral core plug leads, NGK plugs

California Moke 4 core radiator with 4 blade steel fan
13 row oil cooler
Lightened flywheel, Cooper S b/plate, orange diaphram

1100S gearbox fitted with Mk1 Cooper S ratios and 3.44 diff

This engine will be going into my lightweight van to replace the existing 1380 that's lived in there for more than a decade now (fitted with a Kent 266 and MK2 Cooper S head).

Should be an interesting power to weight ratio.

Sounds nice, I'm green with envy.

Hey that GT40 R, isn't that for resister fitted ignitions? Has your 65 van got that?

From the web:
The GT40 requires 12 volts on the positive side, whereas the GT40R requires 9 volts which is accomplished by using an inline resistor in the power supply wire to the coil. In the case of an Escort, the resistance is built into the power supply wire to the coil.

You can get an add-on 1.5 ohm ballast resistor to run these GT40R coils off 12V. Or go to the wreckers and nick one off a Euro car.

I just bought a GT40T - only about $3 more than a GT40
Well worth it I reckon :D

I've heard those later type (epoxy filled) ones like GT40T give more trouble (ie die) than the old oil filled ones. But they do look cool.
I ran one with a Pertronix kit for a while.

Yeah I've fitted an in line ballast resistor and a relay between the starter solenoid and the coil. That way the coil gets a full 12 volts at start but then runs at 9 volts...

Lumeniition replaces the points with an optically activated chopper wheel which is connected to an electronic modulle. I've run these in my Mini and Rover V8 for years and found them to be quite reliable and a whole lot less hassell than points.

Rollmaster use a double row Iwis chain and have nine keyway slots on the cam wheel to enable adjustment.

The Osellli may be replaced with a GRE manifold if I can figure out how to get some filtration behind it. I've heard the Mini Spares manifold is quite good also.

Sounds sweet, whats the expected power output? Sounds grunty!

I just like the fact that its going in a van. Ahh yes, those days of me with my hot motor in my van :D

So, when is she gonna be running?

I'm hoping for 100 bhp+ maybe as much as 115 if I set it up right. I haven't used an RE13 cam before so I have no definite figures, but it should produce signifcantly more grunt than the 1380 / 266 combination did.

The van has some f/g panels, perspex windows and l/w seats so it should be quite nippy.

Getting nailed by a Mini sedan is most upsetting for your average ricer. Getting nailed by a commercial is downright distressing......
