Tomorrow i plan to go out and purchase a manifold gasket and thermostat, any suggestions to where and what i actually need for the thermostat? are they a standard thing or are there different ones for different cars?

There are 3 different ones- 74C, 82C, 88C. I'd forget the 88C and pick the middle one. I got the 74C one now, and the heater is not real keen in cold weather.. 
82C will be fine in Summer too- it'll be wide open long before it can boil..
