I was reading this book the other day entitled "lemon!" basically it lists a number of lemons in motoring history. leyland P76, leyland Marina, Nissan Exa...then i came across MINI MOKE which i thought was quite high-larious ![]() also it had the Riley Elf... i can't remember exactly what it said but it was something alonmg the linbes of taking the style and elegange of the mini minor and wrecking it...or somehting. also taking the cramped interior and destroying the ease-of-parking...or something so moke owners...get a real car!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I think the moke was mentioned in that book because of its 'army paracar' origins. its whimpy ground clearance and front wheel drive. Not suitable for desert storm. |

yeah thats what most of the story was about,m the british army approached BMC looking for a jeep-style car, but it has no ground clearance, tiny wheels, front wheel drive and so on, making it useless to them... |

As far as what it was originally designed for it might be a lemon but as a standalone car nothing will ever compare to the first time I took it for a spin in summer with the roof down along the beach. That'll be something that sticks with me forever. It's been an awesome five years with my moke. Shard |

Wasn't it a Lemon because it was meant to be some Army car?? I first thought Mokes were hideous but now I want... |

The BRITISH Moke with 10" rims was pretty useless due to the ground cleanance problem. But the clever AUSSIES added 13" wheels and longer rear trailing arms. The only downside was the reduced turning circle (otherwise the front tyres hit the inner guards). The Aussie Army used them for years. Has the author actually seen a Riley Elf or Wolseley Hornet? More leg room in there than a BMW MINI in a much smaller package. BTW: That lemon book is crap. ![]() |

I've just come back from the BMC day, and either because/despite their reputation the Leyland P76 is now quite a collectors car! |
