Post subject: | Mini Minor Info Needed |
I'm trying to find some info on my prokect shell. It's apparently an ex gov-pov-pack car. Came with wind up windows but the magic wand type gear change. The I.D plate has been removed also. What I'm trying to find out is what external details it would have came with. I'm guessing the boot would have been badged "Morris Mini Minor" but what about the front. Also what type of grille would it have had, the pressed metal 850 or Morris 7 slat type? Cheers, Dan |

The Australian "Mini-Minor" is a tad rare - they weren't badged as such from the start rather as Morris 850s. In 1964 though when the Deluxe came in the "Mini-minor" kept going underneath it in the range as basically a renamed 850 and everything that entails - sliding windows, pudding stirrer etc. I believe it died in 1966 or 67 due to poor sales. The deluxe was hardly any more expensive yet you got a bigger engine, better seats, better windows etc. As for the grille my guess would be pressed steel 850 type, becuase, well, it is an 850 ![]() The front badging would be just as deluxe/850, the one piece chromed morris badge with wings. like this... ![]() |

My dear old mum had a Morris Mini Minor, it was just a flash 850 with carpet, had sliding windows and instead of the handle on the door lock had a long plastic covered cable to open the doors and dont forget the bumper overriders just like a cooper S and a heater> It was a English import though, many manufactors have made specials for the Government, sounds very much like it would of been a deluxe fittes with 850 engine and box or 998 from the commercial range (van ), there are probably no records or pics still around as the Government fleet section was sold of years ago, its last name was DASFLEET and no doubt they would of had records and pics of the cars |

The then NSW electricity supplier - Sydney County Council - purchased quite a number of mini sedans. They were a cacky yellow and basically had sliding windows, early vinyl seats and a pudding stirrer. The engines varied with the year of manufacture, some had 850's some had 998's and my ex wife's had an 1100 engine. I cant remember how they were badged though - sorry |

Thanks for that guys. I'm going to strip back some of the layers of paint and have a peeks at it original colour. Also I've noticed the floor of the batt box is not welded in, its screwed on. Is this a normal thing or has someone just screwed a replacement in? I'll speak to the DASFLEET guys on base. They might know if any records survived. Also can I get this car registered if it has no I.D Plate? I'd hate to fix it up and then not be able to drive it. |

I cant remember how they were badged though - sorry My recollection was they were a light green, but like you I can't remember the badve details. |

These cars had the chassis number stamped into the shell and so it won't be a problem. In those days the id plate was not a legal requirement and meant nothing apart from having the vehicle details. Some think it is a comp, iance plate but it is nothing of the sort. |

I think what you will need to do is apply for a VIN number and have an authorised agent stamp that onto the body somewhere. It will be an enormously long number like a modern VIN. i would be ringing the RTA now to confirm the process. The battery box does sound like a bodge rather than original. My memory of the ex SCC car Mike_Byron mentions is similarly vague, but I thought it had morris mini minor on the boot; the normal deluxe/850 bonnet badge, but I have no recollection of the grille. My guess would be 850, but I really don't have a clear picture in my mind. Edit - Chris, they were definitely a yellow colour but quite light, rather than a green shade. KB |

Sweet, I've already got a spare front badge then. ![]() I'll hunt around for the other parts, but in the meantime I'll have a chat to the RTA and see what they say about a new VIN. ![]() |

Back from Melbourne cup lunch - bottle of scotch as a lucky door prize The green cars were prospect county council - that jogged my memory. My ex wifes was definately yellow and had an 1100 motor with a very low diff ratio. Jogging the memory again "morris mini minor" sounds familiar. They were a very basic minimade for meter readers and the like, Had key turn ignition and the single centre speedo. |
