i was just eating dinner when the familiar smell of petrol came wofting throught the air. I thought this wasnt right so i went investigating, I opened the door to my single car garage and what did i find??? A $15 premium unleaded lake of fuel is what i found. The smell of fuel was insanly strong!!! I cleaned it up the best that i could and let the rest vaporise away. I went looking to see what caused my mini to spill its guts all over the floor and i found that when i moved the tank to the side so i could fit new suspenion, the rubber hose has sheared on the edge of its hole through the boot and proceeded to spill all my lovely petrol over the ground!!! what a crap start to a saturday night!!!

JAM - the benefits of Acryllic vs 2 pak, here endeth the lesson!

when you say ripples - in the paint or on the metalwork? - reason I ask coz if it was just ripples in the paint and you had a fair few coats on from memory, you could have just blocked it back with wet & Dry and buffed again?

I had the exact same thing happen doing the exact same job... i was over at antos helping work on his car, got home and i could smell the petrol vapour through the garage door. I lost about 7 litres of premium... spare wheel hole was a puddle of fuel and battery was half in it  I removed the back seat and some had even seaped through the tar sealant  . Lucky i found it when i did otherwise my back seat would probably smell of a petrol station.
I would suggest buying a new piece of hose because it hardly costs much and will be stronger than an old one.

I would probably take the tank out, enlarge the boot floor hole, fit a BIG rubber grommet, then refit the fuel line...

OR

I cant remember where the tank outlet pipe ends.... but maybe you could have a short rubber fuel hose from the tank, with a short brass pipe thru the bodywork (grommet) then connect it back to the rubber fuel line under the car. At least then, the only thing that could wear out against the body is the grommet....

(see the work of art, *sorry*, crappy diagram.... below) MSPaint rules
