I have a clutch that when pressed to the floor isn't fully disengaging the gears. Now I've just changed the release bearing and notice there is no return spring from the arm to the slave cylinder but from the looks it hasn't had one for a long time. I also noticed the pushrod has alot of sideways play in it. I'm not losing any clutch fluid so there's no leaks. Help, this is driving me nuts and I need my daily driver on the road not parked in the driveway

adjusted the stop on the housing? you could have an auto?

If the master cylinder seals are rooted, the fluid won't get pumped properly and the fluid will leak past to remain in the reservoir. You won't see any leaks, but you won't get enough clutch action either. At least, that's what happened to me. Got mine resleeved. |

I bet your clutch arm is worn. The ball at the bottom that sits in the bearing carrier usually wears. A little wear here can make a BIG difference to clutch operation. |

could also be wear in all of the clevis pins that the clutch arm and pedal/piston pivot on. change those and you might be surprised how much extra movement you regain <edit> see what i said here and read Marcel's description for enlightenment. http://forums.ausmini.com/viewtopic.php?t=9120&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15 you too grasshopper can have a clutch that works

Thanks for the replies 
Stop is adjusted correctly and the cleavis pins looked fine when I had em out , so did the ball at the end of the clutch arm. Master cylinder seals could be a culprit as I have no idea on their age, I have Geoff (the local mini panel beater/ mech/nutcase) coming over the sarvo to have a squiz at it, fingers cross it's something silly I've missed or at least an inexpensive part to replace/restore

It occurred to me after I had mine resleeved that, with a leaking master cylinder, you should be able to pump the clutch and momentarily get enough clutch movement. I had problems selecting gears at lights when I had the clutch depressed while waiting for the lights to change (Fluid leaking past the piston back into the reservoir). As I said, I never tried it but it might help you pin down the problem with your system. |

Well turns out a slightly modified clutch arm (bent) fixed the problem, there wasn't enough adjustment left in it but now I've got a fair bit again and the clutch works like a dream again. On the down side I noticed my engine steadies are rooted so looks like a pair are needed soon
Can't complain though, the poor girl is nearly 30 years old and is due for some tender care (and a BFH)
