Well I will be restoring my mini in a few weeks so I need to start collecting some parts as the car is 450kms from the nearest mini shop.

So what do I need/should replace, to rebuild my subframes (hydro)? Also are there harder bushes or the like that are better to buy than the standard type?

What should or will have to be replaced is a matter of condition and/or age.
If money allows, it wouldn't hurt to fit new mounts, nuts and bolts where you can get them, but if working on a tight budget, a good clean and maybe paint will be enough sometimes.
Remember its always the cheapest parts that will stuff up in the future, so if the whole car is getting a decent rebuild, look at changing or restoring anything you can pry off it.

I'm doing my subframes at the moment, they got new rubbers, bleed/grease nipples and will get new blake lines and fittings.

Well they are in perfect working order at the moment, but since I will be stripping them to re paint I probably should replace it all I guess? Any idea of complete cost? Mainly I was trying to get an idea of the items that would be on everyones must do list.

i can get a set of dry subframes, straightened and powdercoated for ~$650...hydros are rarer...and so prolly more expensive...i am swapping mine over from hydro to dry...and getting my nice spax shockers :) dont even try to get my hydros off me...they're mine forever ;)

I can't give any ideas of prices, since im not sure how they differ to hydro, but you will decide if it needs replacing as you go.
If a rubber component is cracked or has a hole, change it.
Cost will also depend on whether you clean and paint it yourself of have someone do it for you.

Are you doing any work on the brakes while its apart? Discs, drums?

Well i bought a set of dry sub frames to put in but have decided to stay with hydro. I will be doing all the work myself (unless i get into trouble) so im only looking at parts.

I will be replacing anything that needs attention which includes the brakes. Is it possible for me to put a kit through the master cylinders, or do I have to get new ones?

Just looking for some advise on people must do's, so any advise will be greatly appreciated.

You can kit them, just take it apart before you buy the kit
that way if it is too corroded & you decide to buy a new master, you won't have wasted money on the kit

Location: Sydney - strangely, I am glad of the sight of hills!!
all the rubber bushes - they perish on contact with oil .....you can get urethane ones
check the needle rollers on the upper control arms at the front and on the trailing arms at the rear - i would replace them, but if you are budget check, clean, regrease
at the front on the upper control arms - replace the nylon cup for the knuckle joint and regrease - check the ball on the trumpet, should be ok if properly greased, but if not it may have worn through the nylon cup and started wearing on the metal
ball joints - may be able to get away with reshimming but they are relatively cheap
the rubber mounts on top of the towers may be perished - not sure if the is really a problem as NVH in a mini is to be expected!

basically anything that moves, or pivots is a candiadate for replacement, especially if it perishes (rubber) or is not properly lubricated
