I snapped a head bolt.

I think i had the wrong setting on torque wrench. (60 pound....should have been 42)

WTF DO I DO ?!?!?!? :? :shock: :? :shock: :cry: :cry: :cry: :cry: :cry:

Please advise, can it just be drilled out by a qualified person ?

Should I avoid driving it ? (im thinking yes atm and not driving it)

Those old 1098 headbolts are all fatigued from old age.
Do what the rest of use have done when we break those things- chuck `em and replace with proper head studs and the later flanged nuts.

With the head off, the remains of bolt will unscrew from block easy with the gentle use of hammer and centre punch. :wink:

If you take the head off, you should be able to unscrew the broken piece with your fingers as ther is no load on the bolt.

Buy some new head bolts as well.

Only A series that used headbolts (3/8 UNC) in a Mini was the Oz made 1098, AFAIK.
All others used studs and 3/8 UNF nuts. These are far less likely to break.

I doubt you will find NEW headbolts for a 1098 now. And they are an odd length too, if you try to find grade 5 or 8 bolts elsewhere... :roll:

After breaking these old headbolts most of us have sworn off using them. Nowadays they just break too easy. :cry:

I rang James (Kazjim) in a mad panic.

He told me calmy the easyout solution, but told me to take the head off first and see if it was a simple fix.

There was enough bolt sticking out to remove it with multigrips :D

Thanx for eveyone who replied :)

Gonna take this time to replace all the gaskets, head bolts and exhaust studs.

If it had have been worse i was this close to lighting the f'king thing on fire......or selling it once it was fixed...lol.

Been thier and done that to..I wa luck and was able to spin the remainder out..I put it down to the bolt stretched or compretion in the Thread hole..I'f you can blow any oil in the thread holes with a aircompressor prior just to be sure :wink:
What head gasget have you got..the Black one with Blue Piping..998/1098 block :?:

Its a 1098 block

Unsure of gasket, i cant remember what i looks like, lol, spent more time staring at the broken bolt thinking.."omg...what have i just done!' lol.

Pretty sure its blue/grey

The one that went last week was a crappy copper one.......yeah...i did a head gasket before i even hit 10,000k after my $3000 rebuild!! :evil: Next time i do rebuild myself.

Another that has srecumed to the Copper head gasket to the 1098..
Get the ACL..black head gasket and you will have little troub;es if you do everything else correctley.
get the head off and you should be able to spin the last of the thread out no troubles, try with out the multy grips you may be lucky also.
Change frome bolts to suds as mentioned above :wink:
and see if you can check your tourque wrench while your at it 8)

If you are looking for one-
ACL?s VRS gasket kit for a 998/1098 is P/No. CP250MT. :wink:
For some reason the packaging says 998, but no mention of 1098. Strange marketing... (lack of). :lol:

Raided Kazjims boxs of handy bits and pieces....grabbed some heads studs instead of bolts :)

Also because i need the car on the road ASAP i had to buy a gaket kit.......66 f'king dollars. :evil: ohwell, needed it in a hurry.
