I am changing my clutch slave cylinder over at the moment and i've run in to a problem.
I am trying to replace the hose from the slave to M/C and i cant for the love of me get the nut at the end of the hose undone on the M/C side. Its underneath the bracket next to the engine mount. It wont budge or i cant get any spanner in to loosen it.
I can loosen the big nut on top fine but the hose underneath keeps spinning.
Anyone got a solution or a trick they can share with me please.

Okay - I had the same problem. Ultimately I took off the clutch master cylinder, withdrew the metal pipe and took the rubber hose out through the hole after the top nut was removed.

I took the view that if slave needed rebuilding/replacing then so would the master. On replacing the clutch master i also found that anyone with a hand larger than a five year old's cant slip the pin into the pivot rod. Sigh !!!!!!!!!!!

I,ve got the M/C off and the metal pipe, the problem is when i turn the top nut the Hose is spinning around underneath even when i'm holding it tight. Cant seem to get a spanner over the nut at the end of the hose.
I cant wait to put it all back together. took me ages to get the bloody split pin out of the clutch arm.
All the fun things of owning a mini.

are you replacing the hose? you should be. if so. hold the bugger with some multigrips. it'll come off. may just need a bit of wd40 to loosen it. The bottom nut if i remember correctly is a 5/8. stick a socket on the top one. and hold the spanner on. would be easier if there was two of you. unfortuantly it can be a bit of a pain as the nutor hosenut may well be facing an odd angle and you won't be able to get the spanner on. just get the whole thing to spin a bit(using the socket on top to spin it) and then get the spanner on. It is a should be a pretty easy thing to do. if i was over there i would come and give you a hand.

Funnily enough I did the same job on Saturday and it went fairly well. Okay, I forgot the anti-vibration washer on the top of the hydraulic hose, but it went fairly smoothly. I was advised that any issue with the clutch hydraulics is most likely the hose, and it was fairly cheap (NZ$32), so you can grip the top of that hose in any way possible to get the nut turning, then it just drops out. Toss it and fit a new one.

Oh, and my one-man brake bleeding kit from SuperCheap actually worked quite well.

cheers Aaron, i'll give the multigrips a go tomorrow. The hose has been on there a while by the looks of it so i'll soak the bastard in a bit of wd40.

I tried tonight with a pair of cheap multigrips from work and they cant grip the round metal part of the hose. I looked underneath the car and the nut underneath cant move as it sits against a little lip to stop it turning.
is it worth me going out and investing in a good set of multigrips, do you think they will grip better?
Each time i turn the top nut the hose is spinning. The other option i might have to do is remove the brake M/C to get at it from the other side, but i'd prefer not too.
I have thrown some photos in to show the problem.
any advice will be grateful!

Okay I see you dilemma
Grab an ordinary pair of pliers and simply bend that bit of metal up out of the way. Do it bit by bit so you dont distort the shape. Once its out of the way, you can use what ever multi grips you have to hold the bottom nut. Its part of the hose btw.

On my mini this bit of metal forms part of the bracket that locates the engine steady bar, from the engine, to the body. I am almost sure yours should the same also but maybe others can add a comment.

If I am right, your motor moves and bangs everytime you change gear or open or shut the throttle.

What about wedging an ezyout/stud extractor into the pipe, locking it enough to get the bolt turning? Failing that, a cutting disk on a dremel and cutting the nut off? I removed the engine steady to make more room.

yep Mike its the same piece the stedier bar goes on. i've lifted that up to gain more access. I tried bending the lip up too, did'nt want to budge.
Anton i might have to change my name from ChopChop to SmashSmash soon the way that little piddly piece of pipe is peeving me off.
Mike will try and bend it up tomorrow again with the pliers. I think a better pair of multigrips should help too.

Why is it bent down like that ??? It should be erect ??? at least paralell to the ground. I have a feeling you have some sort of bodgey engine steady ?? Is that so ??
I have a number and you can have one if yours is bodgey

Mike, Its undone at both ends, i'm going to replace the rubbers while im at it.
Angus dog what is an ezyout/stud extractor, are they easy to get? Would maybe a larger bolt up the pipe tight in there do the trick? Then i can hold the multigrips down lower and get a better grip.

At last i fixed the problem!
I ended up drilling a small hole thru the lip of metal then thru the metal piece on the end of the hose. Then screwed in a metal screw to hold it in place, then undone the top bolt and there you have it. problem solvered.
