poeee has bad luck with the wiring in his car. Something always seems to be wrong. Usually the Prince of darknesses gremlins are in the wiper switch, meaning that the wipers wont stop when you want them to, but tonight they decided to inhabit the indicator stalk.

We'd just got on to the melb/geelong rd, heading back from the monthly VMCI social night, when i noticed that his headlights werent on. They'd been on before, the switch was in the on position, and the dashlights were on, but the headlights werent.

So now the lights will only work when the indicator is either left or right, or when the high beams are on. poeee managed to rest the indicator stalk between the indicator and the neutral position, so that the lights were on, but we had to hands out the window as indicators for the rest of the trip.

My wiring is ****** aswell.. The indicators decided to stop working one day. But now they work after I 'warm them up'.. Before I drive anywhere I have to put either the left or right indicator on wait about 10 seconds and it will start working.. after that it works fine. I have no idea how that is possible, but nothing with lucas suprises me. I know with the old holdens you can get replacement bosch wiring harnesses.. is this possible with minis? would DEFINATLY be worth it.

I think Vinwire make them. From memory you can specify the gauge wire and they will make it using the original colour codes.

funny enough...i had ALOT more electrical issues with my 1996 Honda Prelude than with my mini...the speedo and tacho would now and again decide to switch off (they still worked, ie. the needles still showed accurate figures, but the lights went off so you couldnt see anything)...gonna replace all the wiring with one of those vinwire rigs though...i dont even wanna try figuring out what goes where once i've managed to take all the wiring out of my shell...and i cant be assed labelling it all...and ofcourse none of the wires are color coded...well they are...they just dont matchup orange wire into green wire, red wire into white wire...green into green...etc etc...its a f'cking nightmare...

The combo indicator/dip/flasher switch can be a PIA. You may be able to fix but a new one is the best bet. Not cheap though-around the $100 mark. The indicator contact is a bit of bent phosphor bronze wire and they wear and break. You can bend up a new piece and with a bit of patience you can repair. You have to drill out a rivet that holds it all together and replace with a bolt. The dip/flasher bit is a phospher bronze strip and they break off and/or the contacts overheat.
The clubman rocker style switches fail regularly as well. Not as reliable as the earlier toggle switches. (I'm talking Lucas reliability here)

Try cleaning up the contacts before taking it appart I reckon sometimes it will make it work a bit of steel wool and see how it goes.



My clubby rocker switches were a bit broken(plastic) if they are not working and you need a new one you might as well try pulling the switch appart and cleaning contacts and making sure everything is as it should be. be careful pulling them appart they are really easy to break

I've yet to pull the shroud off and have a look, it doesn't matter while i'm driving during the day, as the blinkers still work!

When the rocker switch broke a while ago, I had a spare, but put that in and when you switched it on sometime it would work, other times wouldn't. I carefully pulled the switch appart and cleaned the contacts (I highly recomend doing this!) and it's as good as new!

I have the exact same problem with my head lights as in they only work when the blinkers are on or high beam is on. Being limited with electrical knowledge, I just don't drive the car at night now.

You should modify your headlight wiring to include a relay.
Those contacts just can't handle that much current, & they stuff up eventually.

As a bonus you will have brighter headlights!

Maybe Poeee will do it as a How To ?
