Well i was thinking about what i should do with my MK1 S. Do i go with an alternator, or do i stick with a generator? I am leaning towards having an alternator just for practicle reasons. It is not going to be a 100% original resto. So opinions would be welcome.

Cheers

Aaron

I had an alternator on my Mk 1 S many years ago. I think from memory and I am sure someone else will clarify this. But the alternator is a better charging system over the generator.

Dont ask me how its done and what bits you may or may not need to replace as that is how I brought the car :)..

A few years later when I brought my white Mini which is the Mini I have always regretted selling. It had a generator on it. But either way I thought it worked just as well as the alternator. I do remember however adjusting the regulator a few times though to keep the charge up.

Keep the generator handy, but put in an alternator. It takes about 2 mins to change when you go to shows etc. I have not thrown any of Lillee's original bits away, even her really smelly, rotten, crappy sun visors

Chong, it is not that simple- your K had an alternator from the start, NOT a generator (aka dynamo in pomspeak).

There is really not much wrong with a generator, if in good condition. I would keep it on a Mk1 for originality. They are cheap to fix too. :)

sorry just went and checked - i only have two spare alternators - no generators :(

you can have one of the spares though...

here is mine from the basher - lucas 15AC needs external regulator

Image

here is another lucas (model?) with internal reg.

Image

and another Bosch one with internal transistor regulator that i pulled of the Mini K in tassie all those years ago.

Image

you can have either of the last two if you want....
