sorry to post in the wrong section but it is ergent. can i use a snell m2000 approved helmet in hillclimbs and sprints? ive found a place that is selling really nice helmets for cheap, but they are m2000 approved not sa2000, so im worried they will be illegal, anyone wanna shed some light on this?

Helmets only need to be australian saftey approved. The cheaper they are the heavier they are. They all have to meet the same guidelines.
I doubt that the helmet your looking at isn't approved.

Ask a reasonable question, get a reasonable answer :wink:

well in light of your answer i found that they are not approved, so i went to my local motorcylce place and bought a brand new agv helmet, the 2006 model which was also quite cheap, yet is very comfy and light, thanks for your help anyway

na they do comply with the as1698 standards, which is legal, when you go into international competition the rules go to fia which is extremely strict but for club level as1698 is fine

i believe that its illegal to sell / buy 2nd hand helmets

why be cheap after all its designed to protect your head and stop you from getting

hmm yes the helmet is brand new, bought from a dealer, i know know that i dont want a second hand helmet, when i say cheap i mean cheap in the way of most it was still $300 bucks, but thats better then 1000 any day, and if it can save your head on a motorbike hitting the floor, im sure it will be ok in the car

here it is, im getting the iridium blue visor for it but they had to order it in

There are three standards most need to be aware of:

DOT (Department of Transport)
Snell
AS1998

AS1698 is the one you must have, but the more you have the better the helmet as the standards look at different aspects. SNELL look at little things like piecing protection from protruding bolts and stuff or rocks on the road. Other helmets don't worry about that, but this makes the helmet heavier in use.

Its not illegal to buy or sell second hand helmets, but the scrutineers will look for ANY signs of damage/scratches AND that the foam section that covers your forehead has not become hard (sign of age/wear).
I wouldnt bother with second hand, could get new helmets over here for $150 3-4 years ago. (Yes my head's only worth $150, but the helmet works :))

i dislike full faces i dont understand why in a car you would need a full face ????
you have a wind screen in front of you i like my open face helmet nice and cool breaze on the face and its not like you are going to remove ya chin on tarmac like a bike rider ... no offence intended just inside the cabin it gets bloody hot and haveing the major coolers of the body coverd (head feet hands) you heat up real quick just my thoughts
just get into a fire suit and you will know what i mean nomex undergarment then full overals nomex socks nomex balaclava then gloves boots and goggles 5 mins in this and ya ringing wet ...

yer i used a motorbike helmet that i use to use for go karting at the last sprint i did

all they wanted to see was no scratches or damage on it and aus stanards sticker

Whether or not to use a full face depends on how close your nose is to the steering wheel. Prolly more likely to whip your head sideways than to hit the wheel in a race car....

You hear a lot of harley guys carping on about this in the bike magazines. Turns out that you raise the chance of a broken neck if you crash on a bike with a full face, but very slightly. Beats grinding your face flat on the asphalt for the other 299 crashes I think. :roll:

They only like the open faces cos they can pose to the world with their best scowl anyway.

so i went full face just for that

i can tell you from personal experience that a full face does NOT give you a broken neck and DOES stop you from losing your face when you slide along the road on it :D

if a full face broke your neck when you landed on it - then all the bike racers would have open face helmets :roll:

as for in a car - just make sure EVERYTHING is secure if you want to wear an open face - may a driver (and co driver) has regretted wearing the open face helmet when the fire extinguisher broke their jaw :shock:
