My starter is spinning, but not engaging with the flywheel. I assume the bendix gear is sticking. What's the best way to clean and lube this?

I had the same problem on the weekend, I just gave the shaft a hit with fine wet and dry and then a light smear of grease. Alright so far.

Haven't pulled it out yet so don't know what condition bearings etc are in - if it is stuffed I'll be putting a gemini one in anyway...

I was always told not to use grease? as it mixes with the clutch dust to make a grinding paste and wears things out faster? I was thinking some kind of graphite powder or other dry lube maybe?

I didn't put much grease on at all, just a light film, but I think you could be right. Oh well, if it breaks I will know not to do it again. What are the advantages of using a Gemini starter on the mini, I have one lying araound somewhere.

I think mainly to get rid of the problem I have here - It is the pre engaged type. Also it has more torque, being of newer design and for a larger engine. People I have spoken too say it spins the motor over like there's no spark plugs in the head!!!

If it spins but does not engage the ring gear it could just need a lube or it could mean that the bendix gear has split and died
Pull the starter and check the bendix.

Don't tap your foot, you will blow the pistons out of the wheel cylinders! Sorry Mick, no spare drums.

Clean it with Metho or Solvent and lube it with dry graphite , never put grease or oil on , it only attracts all the dirt and you end up with that same problem
