hey guys im just after some info on hillclimbing, if anyone knows, what is required, ie. car condition, prices all the stuff i should know, i wanna start doing motorsport so i think its a good place to start!

You will need a CAMS license for a start, probably a 2S license. To get a CAMS license, you need to be a member of a car club.

Your car will need a fire extinquisher and a secondary bonnet restraint. They can be a bit picky on these items, like you have to be able to reach the fire extinquiser with your belt done up and the bonnet restraint has to be of 'adequate strength and limited extensibility', so no ocky straps.

On the day you will need an approved helmet and full length natural fibre clothing.

Note, this is all from memory, and thats how it is here in SA.

yer that souds right, with the clothing, does it have to be a race suit or just normal natural fibre stuff!???

Just a normal cotton long sleeved shirt, long trousers (jeans) , good shoes and socks. NO nylon allowed. Gloves only need to be worn in open wheelers...

Or if you can afford one and want to look the part, a racing suit...

Hillclimb up the Road near me, of which John Bowe had the quickest time till very recently, maybe even this year,
i was talking to a bloke, 75 bucks and get about 5 runs,

But i said why pay when i can do it everyday. So i think i get 70 seconds hahaha a mini wins the sub 1600cc class, it gets i think* 48 seconds HAHAHA

Sorry Namibian CAMEL but here on the mainland we won't let you drive in a hillclimb wearing gumboots..... What they do in Tassie is up to them but then again, I am told that gumboots are just about normal wear down there anyway?????

sorry to dig up an old thread but , now that i have the car and that is under way i was thinking about the gear u wear, if i was to rock up to my first hill climb in a race suit and gloves, would i be laughed at cos i look like im trying to hard, or are there plenty of people that do, i dunno why but i would feel alot better if i was in a race suit, dunno why, and are motorcycle helmets the same as car ones? cos they seem more expensive for car ones..

You don't need a race suit or gloves for hillclimbs in a Mini meeni but you can use a race suit if you want but gloves are only needed in open wheelers.

As long as you have a long sleeve cotton shirt (not nylon) buttoned at the wrist and trousers such as jeans or cotton ones with socks and good shoes.

A CAMS appproved helmet is needed.

Why dont you just spectate for a few events and see what people are wearing etc. That way, you would only look "overdressed" if you rock up wearing a dinner suit and bow tie. You could also talk to some of the drivers to get opinions on what helmet and so on.

Hey meeni, the Gippsland Car Club is having a hillclimb on Sept 25 down here in Morwell.

Maybe you can make your way down and have a look as there are usually a few Minis show up on the day.

You've never been to a hillclimb? and you want to start competing?

Attend one. Would be a good starting point.

You race suit should be last on your list (you'll grow allot by the time your car is ready to race).
Remember You've got to get the roll cage and actually get the car going first. Lot's of $$$

Hillclimbs are a different form of motorsport and it takes a different approach to get up a hill quick.
Don't fit thing to the car that will make it heavy and slow it down.
I would not fit a roll cage to a mini unless it was highly modified. You don't need a cage in an unmodified body. You are not going very quick at most climbs and you are probably safer than on the road.
The cage adds extra weight and raises the centre of gravity!

Crash Helmets.
You need a helmet that complies to CAMS rules.
CAMS rules for helmets a very low.
If it has the AS1698 (Australian Standard) on it you can use it. AS1698 is on all motorcycle helmets in aus.

You do not need gloves (extra weight anyway)

For a road mini in a hillclimb you need to.....
Tie the bonnet down
Fit two carby return springs (per carb)
Take off the hubcaps
Make sure the car is safe! the scruitineers will check things like, wheel bearings, wheel nuts, brakes, battery clamp, seat belt, etc.
Make sure the car is empty of all things under the seats and in the door pockets.
