Can a muffler have a huge impact on performance?

JAM is too loud! :shock: It will be my daily hack from Monday, and I need to make it quieter.....but will changing the muffler to something that 'muffles' more decrease the power output?

yes, but not terribly. you will notice it, but you won't worry about it at much, when you can potter around in the quite surrounds of JAM. i have a peashooter you can have in exchange for yours :lol:

yea I have a full pea shooter system too, as new! Came out of JAM when I bought it..... NOT GOING BACK IN!!! :lol: :P

How does the design of a muffler make the exhaust note quieter? There is straight through type ones, and the other type....someone want to explain the difference?

what happens is inside the muffler box, is that in a straight thru one litterally does exactly that. where as a proper muffler, actually has a series of chambers inside. this in effect breaks the exhaust up and makes it disperse. takes a little extra time to get it out the back pipe but as it does it is more a flow of exhaust rather than a pulse. making it somewhat quieter. the more chambers and corners the quieter the car. i'm sure if you googled it, it would explain it somewhat clearer than i have.

baffles, anton... baffles... ;)

the sound wave comes along the exhaust pipe and finds itself in the muffler where it hits the baffles and if reflected back (reflected waves) against the new sound waves coming in the the muffler (incidental waves).

when the inverted reflected waves meet the incidental waves, they cancel each other out (in a perfect system.. ;) )

It can. Aren't the RC40 Mini mufflers supposed to be one of the best?? They're not too loud.

Our XR8 used to have a 'sports' exhaust on it (piece of crap dealer fitted). It was a dual system from the cats back with 4 Hotdogs and no mufflers. It had a VERY LOUD V8 rumble but the constant drone inside the cabin was horrible.
We've since installed a full Herrod stainless steel job. Headers to the tail pipes. No hotdogs, just high quality mufflers and high flow cats. It made a HUGE difference to the performance. The increase in torque was very noticeable and an extra 30kw at the wheels.
It sounds nice as well :lol: :lol:

So basically the more free flowing, the less back pressure on the engine therefor increases power, whereas more restrictive makes for quieter.

So, the solution?
1. Go and get a whole heap of sound deadening material to make the exhaust sound quieter from the inside. The problem though is cost and the extra weight the car will have.
2. Fit another quiet one, cheap but less power.
3. Fit both! Put a valve in to switch from one to the other. :D

It's not the sound INSIDE the car that bothers me......it's the sound OUTSIDE the car that is my boggle. Starting JAM up @ 7am, with kids and wife still asleep, brings an almighty wrath :evil:

RC40 won't go in JAM, as I have 2 inch pipe. I will have to fit a replacement 2in muffler.

RC40s don't come in different sizes ? I don't know just asking... :oops:

What extractors are you using :?: are they 2" extractors as well cause 2" is probably a bit large for your 1098 AFAIK :? if you don't have to change your extractors it won't cost much ( I expect ) for them to put 1 3/4 exhaust pipes in 8)

You can AFAIK down size the pipe to go into the 1 3/4 muffler but that wouldn't be the best solution. I guess :(

other than that, you've got a sloping driveway and your street is on a hill... roll it out to the road and turn it on infront of the neighbour...



or you could wake the lazy wife up when you get up :)

Ideally you want a 1.75" pipe, so 2" is already too big for optimum performance. Even so, you should be able to connect a 2" system to an RC40 muffler.

My single box RC40 isn't loud at all. It's the Dellorto that makes all the noise :lol:

I have an LCB, that has been cut off and had a flange welded on. From that a 2 inch engine pipe is welded to another flange, and bolted to the LCB. Works very well....

A single LUKEY muffler sits at the back. It's a straight through muffler, with rooted baffles.

I "could" buy an RC40 and matching pipe, and get a flange welded to the end so that it bolts up to the LCB......hmmm......that would probably be the best solution.....and not noisy you all say?
