G'day

Just bought some reco'd inner CV's or uni's or whatever u wanna call em, and now have the probably common problem of getting the old ones off the gear box. Is there any particular way or trick to doing as the manuals i have arent much help?

PS the CV's are the caged ball type not the rubber unis if that makes a difference.

Its fairly easy. They (if its pot joints we are talking about) are held in place by a spring circlip.
You just have to give them them a hit outwards with a cold chisel and they should compress the circlip and pop off the gearbox.

This assumes that you have the car safely up off the gound with the top ball joint separated from the upper control arm and the axles and caged balls withdrawn from the pot joints.

One last thing - empty the oil out of the gearbox before you start - coz its gonna come gushing once the pot joint pops out

Mike...a cold chisel might do some real damage mate :oops:

a big long brass drift or something similar is just as good :wink:

PS: my ball didn't drop in 66.. :shock: :lol:

Yes - a brass drift is better - gotta get me one of them coz the cold chisel is just too handy when you are angry and frustrated.

The cold chisel worked well on my 'box that isnt on the car but isnt working at all on the one that is. What exactly is a brass drift, where do i get one from and how much are they? altho i dont see something made out of brass working if steel doesnt so is there any other method people have used to get these things loose?

I got a thin 1" `Gedore' O/E spanner, angle ground it out to 32mm to fit over the shaft, then ground a long chisel point on each side.
Sit behind pot joint and `whack!' it from above. Works every time. :wink:

Thanks Doc your method worked a treat. got both of the old CV's off with only minimal damage to the gearbox casing.
