Post subject:  Radio Controlled Minis

Saw an RC mini in the local model shop the other day... 4 wheel drive, petrol powered, about 40cm long, in kit form...

Firstly, why the hell dont they come with a controller????

Secondly, who has one? Are they worth it?? ($250 + controller) Are there many add ons for these toys (bodykits, wheels, suspension kits....)??? And can i upgrade the petrol engine / maybe turbo it??

I wonder if i can get DRIFT tyres to suit it ..... if not, i'll remove the rear wheel drive to make it more authentic 8)

I have an electric one, cost $200 for the kit and then you have to buy a motor, controller and batteries, charger etc etc. Mine is sitting there looking very sorry for itself with a broken drive shaft, yes that right you can break drive shafts on RC mini's too! I guess one day i will fix the thing.

OK i owned a petrol WRX a few years ago, i know a fair bit about RC's having built it and raced it.

1) the outer lexan shell is pretty much universal, so buy a good body/engine combination and bolt on whatever lexan shell you want from Skyline to Mini to
2) Petrol RC goes ****** fast! 0-60km/h in 2 secs! heaps of fun but LOTS of maintenance. Fuel aint cheap, you have to pull apart the motor and rebuild it once in a while as it gets full of crud
3) It doesn't come with a controller cause they let you choose the controller, some like the pistol grip some like traditional. (Pistol grip owns it when you get used to it). Also you can use one controller for any number of cars.
4) If i were you I'd buy bettery RC. You can run it indoors, they still go pretty fast, recharge the battery is cheaper than fuel. Mintenance is lower cause there's no oil involved
5) you can do any number of real car mods to the RC, camber kits, anti roll bars, tougher suspension, slick tyres, 2 gear boxes, sports exhausts, higher Nitro content fuels (yes they run on nitro!). All this equates to one thing: $$$$!!!

Hence why I got rid of the thing and baught a real mini

i dont have a mini but ive got about 5 RC cars all up, all are battery....my favourites would have to be the tamiya F1 cars....those things go hard and look sweet as!! and the losi XX truck i have is sweets too....we've got it to jump a car before (a small car, but a car none the less 8) )

the losi truck i got from my uncle,he had it built at the shop with all the trick bits, titanium tie rods, adjustable shock absorbers....u know the deal...its sweet to drive, but only lasts a couple of minutes on each battery

the F1 cars last longer and are great fun down at the local shopping centre, only problem is that now that its open on sundays theres always cars everywhere :( so it hasnt been out since i raced this old guy in his ovlov....that nearly had a sad ending

i wouldnt mind getting one of those new 4wd touring cars.......they're just a bit expensive these days

Oh yeah the other thing that Petrol has over battery, almost infinite running time. You can top up the fuel tank while it's still running...

Yeah a mate of mine had the F1 battery car, it's pretty sweet...

yeha i've got a couple...(3 actually, but one is stuffed) two are at least 10-12years old and i cant parts for them anymore so i just keep raping the crappiest one to keep the better one running....the newer one is still pretty good tho...

they're surprisingly fast for battery cars.......ive seen one easily go straight past a car doing 60

There will be a few guys (including the Vic state champion) displaying their talents of remote mini driving at our Sofia's display this weekend in Preston. More details in the cruise section.

If ya buy one, get a Tamiya M chassis one. It is electric, but there is a single class of racing just for Mini's! (providing you have a M chassis one)

I've got a TG10 for sale - 3 sets of wheels and tyres (inc. HPI yoko advans) plus a fezza F360GT body and a proline Bini Pooper S in gunmetal which hasnt been run on th car. got a controller and some other spares too. not the quickest nitro around but pretty damn fast.

IF anyone wants it, its $300 ono and ill ship it anywhere in aus, payment by DD only, and i work in a bank so u cant screw me :)

By the way, Tamiya made a MINI body for the TG10, same wheelbase. VERY hard to get hold of but u could give the aus distributors a call perhaps, theyre quite helpful..i forget their name but theyre in lidcombe sydney/

Yeah, same up here Poeee. There is a mob around that races just the one class of the Bini's. I think they are very similar to the one pictured. so the racing would be pretty damn cool.
