I need some advice please.
The 1100s got pinged at the blue slip inspection for a worn and sloppy rack end. The worst possible job on a mini (or variant) is changing a rack with everything insitu.

The questions are
1. Can you change the rack end without totally disassembling (and removing) the rack and..
2. can you buy rack ends ????

The black bible makes references to the difference between Pomgolian and Aussie tie rod diameters ????

I tried to fix my steering in situ once, its impossible, the rack has to be removed.
If the rack end is sloppy on the passenger side, its probably just needs a neoprene(plastic) bush replaced, this requires the rack end to be removed and refitted after bush replacement.
If its the drivers side it may need a shim removed from the rack and pinion.
Anyway thats what fixed my problem

pull the rack out and put in a new one they are cheap enough to do and best of all it will last another 25 years before even having to look at it again.

I've not done them on the car but cannot see why you couldn't. Usually you clamp the rack in a vice to undo the tierod ball ends anyhow.

<edit> provided you can get at the screws holding the boots to the rack.... :x

I'm in the process of doing mine and was told 9 out of 10 can be done in situ. I managed to get to all the screws but to get to the lock nut on the steering ball joint you need to remove a metal cover which is punched onto the rack. This cover plate is tough metal, everything I've used bends! :x Probably need a titanium tool for the job. If I could remove this cover plate I could put the new bush in without removing the rack.

the rack has to come out.You cannot get the locknut or washer off the rack end
when its in situ.Take it from me I tried for hours to do it in situ and gave up.
Also if your going to change the bush in the rack you need it on the bench in a vice.

yeah well,,,even if you could get it all undone in situ, then how are you gonna be able to do it back up tight enough & lock it all back up proply???

a big long tube sockett is required & i don`t beleive that i know anyone with one

the problem is that even if you "Think" that you have it all tight enough & then pien lock the nut, it probly still isn`t tight enough

best to remove it from the car & have it done right

you won`t want that part comming loose i can tell you that,,,not pretty at all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I guess that about sums it up - rack out, rack repair, rack in, rack off.

As i have said, this town is a little loosey goosey and i have been told since its to be club plated, I can repair it at leisure BUT dont bring it back again next year with a sloppy rack end.

Now for the intersting bit - where to source either a rack or a rack end for a ADO16

Aaron - where did Nev W get his ???????

Good news! The 1100 being such a great car (not like the vastly inferior mini) you can remove the rack without removing the subframe....
What the BMC book says.....
Quote:
Section J.3
Steering Rack and Pinion

Removing
Remove the steering column as described in section J.2
Jack up the car beneath the front sub-frame and remove both front road wheels.
Disconnect the steering tie-rod ball joints.
Support the engine with lifting equipment from above or with a variable-height trolly jack under the transmission casing.
Remove the set screws and bolts from the six sub-frame mounting points.
Remove from inside the car the nuts from the "U" bolts screwing the rack housing to the toeboard.

Lower the engine just far enough to permit the rack assembly to be released from the toeboard and withdrawn from the drivers side of the vehicle.
NOTE.- The suspension displacer hoses, hydraulic hoses, controls, etc. have not been disconnected for this operation, and to avoid damaging them the engine must not be lowered more than is absolutely necessary.

Now what I have found is that with most cars you can remove the rack without touching the subframe at all.
You undo the rack and rotate it to get the pinion through the floor and slide it out the side.
If it will not come out just undo the subframe bolts a little (not all the way) and then try again.
Unless it is an very early car (1100S should be late enough) the rack should use the same bushes as the Australian mini rack.
